We recently connected with Jacquia Paul and have shared our conversation below.
Jacquia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
Before I dove deep into holistic wellness coaching, I was a bartender. But not just any bartender, I was a fancy mixologist with the colorful layered drinks and cute garnishes. 2011 life got real, I became a mother. No longer could I rely on alcohol to soothe my emotions. Or cover up nights at the bar with nights I should’ve been doing mirror work. Becoming a mother was defining moment in my professional career because it made me get back on my game. I had stopped working as a MA just to get a piece of the fast money life. The money was great but it wasn’t a stable career for me as a new mom. Being in the bar life also comes with it’s disadvantages such as getting hooked on it. Because I was making drinks daily, I was also drinking daily. Thankfully my mother instincts kicked in immediately and I made the first step which is decision, and I stopped drinking heavily, left the bar scene and enrolled in college. I knew my life path would not be a positive one if I kept feeding my problems with cocktails instead of holistic solutions.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into the health and wellness industry in 2010 as a medical assistant and patient educator. Over the last decade I developed many interests but one stuck with me and that was the art of personal development. Being born with a rare brain disorder called Chiari Malformation, I faced many neurological challenges including fainting spells and migraine headaches until I was officially diagnosed. Chiari Malformation is a congenital disorder where parts of the brain stem extends into the spinal cord causing an array of painful symptoms including anxiety and fibromyalgia. The headaches would prevent me from enjoying life and feeling my best. After the birth of my first son back in 2011, I knew my symptoms could improve if I improved. My mission was holistic health because Chiari tried to rob me of that. Yes, I was born with an abnormality but I refused to let it control my well-being. Fitness was my first love, I loved water aerobics and yoga especially while pregnant. Positive affirmations were a way of life but my social and eating habits did not align with my new path. I made a vow to quit drinking excessively and eating too much fast food. Fast forward many moons later 2016 I gave birth to my second (and last ) son, only this time the bounce back wasn’t as smooth. I fell into a deep depression, gained more than the “baby weight” and ended up unrecognizable to myself. A year later I took my power back with the help of reiki, sound healing and other modalities such as mirror work, deep shadow work and therapy. As a mom who was on her healing journey, I begin to hand create my own herbal remedies for inflammation, period issues, postpartum pains and more! Not only did it rejuvenate my love for self, it allowed me to see that I am worthy of sharing my creations with those I love. I would make specialty tea blends, balms, tinctures, oils , baths etc for family and close friends. I’m sure the internet was an influence but somewhere along the way I wanted to give it a name, my healing and remedies, I needed a place for it. The home was in the holistic wellness realm. I studied to become a wellness coach and stapled myself as holistic wellness coach because of all of the offerings I came with. As a multifaceted being (Aquarius rising) I am here to express my self in many ways. One way of my most masterful ways of expression is through coaching, back in 2021 I became a professional life coach during the pandemic. No better time than then to help people heal who are overly anxious make sense of self and life goals. I also started my own product line meant to heal common ailments with organic herbal ingredients. So my work is centered around the healing arts of herbs and consulting with millennial women who are on a self healing/Personal development journey. I work with women in 1-on-1 and group sessions in person or virtually. Currently I see clients out of my union square space in NYC. I am most proud of having clients who trust me to help them along their journey. I get to share my healing path with them as well when we strategize together on how to help them obtain their life’s goals. As a holistic coach, I will always get to the root of why a client isn’t making moves on their goals, my intuition is my super power.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn how to depend on myself and seek my own counsel. Raised by a single mom who I realize now went through her own healing journey as she raised my sister and I. I grew up with abandonment issues and fear of every good thing leaving me. Life is so funny it’ll keep showing you more proof as to why you hold a certain belief. For a long time as a young girl I felt I had no control. But once I graduated high school and went away for a short stay at SUNY Canton, I gained my full power and released any burden I allowed my upbringing to have on me. From then on I vowed to hold the mantra that “my past does not define me”. Although I am now closer with my Dad, I had to unlearn the fact that my parents weren’t good parents, that my childhood was ruined and that I was ruined. In fact, my parents did the best they could with the knowledge and resources they had at the time. Being raised by a single mom who was too busy keeping the lights on and rent paid to meet our emotional needs taught me to depend on myself for emotionally fulfillment and stability. It’s not that other people don’t have it in them, I’ve concluded alot of people just don’t know how to use. So I vowed to learn how to use my emotional intelligence and therefore always be still enough and sane in the mind to seek my parental guidance from the innate teachings stored in my by my parents’ dna. For that I am forever grateful.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Trusting myself and my abilities. The more I heal and grow, the more clientele I receive. I still share parts of my journey with my audience and I notice they are more receptive to my authenticity. Honestly, now that I think about it, its simply authenticity and trusting that my authentic self is appreciated.
