Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jacquez Whitfield. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jacquez , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve ever worked on was the “SKYDIVE” album by Domani. This project is very near and dear to me. It was 2020 Domani was working on his next project “SKYDIVE”. Prior to SKYDIVE I had never cleared an entire album. When I say clearing and album I mean that all producer agreements, side artist agreements and work for hires are fully executed, split sheets are correct, lyrics are transcribed, songs are properly registered on PRO’s, song are mixed and mastered and all assets have been delivered to DSP’s. This was my first time juggling all of this at once for multiple songs. Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance, 5p’s. The biggest thing I learned is the earlier you start working the more room you have to correct any errors or last minute occurrences, because there are so many moving gears to the release of album you don’t want to be behind the curve. Domani allowed me to put my newly learned skills to test, it was a risk for the both of us but it worked out for the best.
Jacquez , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always loved music growing up, I guess that’s why I spent over 6 years growing up in the marching band. Although after high school I didn’t think to pursue a career in the music industry. I’m from Camilla, Ga where you don’t see any music execs, the closest thing you have to that is the band director. In 2019 I started learning how to DJ. Around the same time as learning how to DJ I got an offer to go on the road with Domani to be his tour DJ since he didn’t have one at that moment. I didn’t really give it that much thought. It was a new experience for me and I just wanted to get the job done. I’ve always had a get the job done mentality, why wait around when you can get up and do something about it. That’s what sets me apart from everyone else. One day I could be the DJ one day I could be a tour bus driver, it didn’t matter as long as we got the job done in a good manner. I transitioned from DJ to A&R Admin after tour because Domani was working on his next project and I knew the job or papering and clearing an album had to get done. In between the transition to becoming an A&R I found a mentor, Mark Jackson. Mark has been in the industry for quite sometime so his knowledge is vast. One thing about my mentor I’ve always admired is that he’s an open book when it comes to knowledge of the music business. He’s never withheld information from me. No matter what job you’re doing it never hurts to have a mentor.
The services I provide are DJ’n, Producer/Artist agreements negotiation and clearances, sample clearance, tracking account payable and receivable, PRO registration, uploading tracks to distributors, Song trust and Sound exchange song registrations, planning and executing studio sessions.
I’m most proud of my skills and knowledge that I’ve obtained in such a short manner of time, but I’m forever a student of the game so there’s always so much more to learn. I want for anyone I work with to know that I care about quality. I like to produce and put good quality work out into the world and get the job done.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
For sure! When I was in college I wish I knew myself more and that I’d be working in the entertainment industry, I would’ve did more more music internships to help out my resume and my network. I probably would’ve even transferred to a school in ATL just to be closer to the music scene to be honest.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I graduated college in my head I thought I’d enjoy working a regular marketing job but that was the complete opposite. I wasn’t happy and I was torn between working a job I didn’t like because I needed the money or hustling and doing something I actually found joy in. That’s when I made the pivot to put my time and hustle toward music.
