Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacquelyn Tolskdorf.
Jacquelyn , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing The Unglitch Marketing Studio wasn’t a breeze. There were a lot of mistakes and lessons learned along the way in the past 9 years. I’ve taken what I’ve learned from the pros that came before me, dusted off my bruised knees during economic crisis’ and launched the only service I provide.
I do it ALL for a brand temporarily… I’m a brand’s Chief Marketing Officer (Fractional CMO) until their sales goals are met for me to train in a new batch of talent when they grow to need a marketing department in-house in their company.
There are many people “in marketing” – but with a background in Corporate Anthropology alongside design – I stand out as a real weirdo. And I like that about me!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
*laughs awkwardly.
Let me just say I can’t stress enough the importance above all business knowledge that you can learn as you go when you start your own business; is a regulated nervous system. You never get to sprint – it’s a marathon for life. And being able to emotionally handle what that entails is more important than any business skill you can start out with. Take it from a work-a-holic turned business owner – In 9 years, I’ve had ulcers, handfuls of hair in the shower I say goodbye to, moments of complete mental breakdown, 8.2 million sleepless nights. I’ve sacrificed relationships, having kids, and spending time with friends – all for my business and my clients. The “career-driven” women was my goal. It would have been great to pause a bit from Years 0-8 to really take stock of things. It’s taken a while but this year is finally about me! As Cher once famously told her mom who told her she should (re)marry a rich man, “Mom, I am a rich man.” Kids don’t seem too far off a financial step (yes, I said financial step…), and friends – well I’m working on it. Wanna be friends?
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
While I have a good mind for marketing, the design part will always be my “first love”. I’m very proud of projects like Habitat for Humanity’s new website design for Marshfield, Wisconsin. I am most known for right off the bat, people’s first impression of me being an oddball. I have a dark sense of humor. Tattoos. Bright clothes. I don’t sugarcoat. You want facts? I’m an encyclopedia, baby! You want schmooze? Oh, boy have you come to the wrong gal!
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I often get asked what a CMO is, let alone a Fractional CMO. It’s not freelancing (No. Freelance is something much different). You are not paying for me part-time, full-time, or on-demand or a’la carte like a freelancer.
You pick your sales goal I find the channels to maximize your budget, get the best return-on-investment and get you to that goal. You are only buying as much of me as you need. A statistical fact: Senior Fractionals like myself get way more done in less time – and achieve far greater outcomes! This sweet spot allows for agility, diversity of thought, and continual innovation, without sacrificing the continuity and commitment of a dedicated team. Benefits? Nah! Lower costs, higher efficiency, and the kind of cutting-edge talent that would otherwise be out of reach.
