We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jacqueline Reynoso. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jacqueline below.
Jacqueline, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I opened up a gallery so I could have a studio area and the space was too large for myself. I had a few girls at the time that I was mentoring and giving art advice to so I decided I would share the space with young emerging artist to help them have a jump start into our art community. So I now have a YOUNG ARTS EXHIBITION that is growing and full of talented young artists. The youngest is 11 and more than half of them are under the age of 25. My mission is to give them a place to learn how to submit into other galleries and get into festivals and other doors that will help them profit as young artists.
Jacqueline, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been an artist my whole life but it was just a hobby. As I was growing up and I told my parents I wanted to be an artist when I grew up they directed me to keep Art as a hobby and go to college to be something else so that’s what I did. I went off to be a bartender and then decided to be a truck driver. I loved traveling so I was a truck driver for 5 years before I decided to take my art career full time. While I was on the road I had many commissions and felt I could possibly do this for a living. So that’s how it started just last year.
So I believe what sets the gallery apart from others is it’s for our youth and emerging artists. A lot of galleries require a more established artist and so it can make it hard for youngsters to get accepted in. My gallery is a place for them to start and gain the “established” requirement they need to grow and expand to more galleries.
Also for me as an artist I am a customized artist because I will paint anything u need me to, if u want to add family members together in a certain background I can do that. I paint whatever u ask of me basically.
I am teaching some of the artists in the gallery to do the same.
I am most proud of how much I’ve grown as an artist in just a short time and I believe as I grow and open doors it will be so good for my artists also because whatever door are opened for me I will try and bring them thru as well.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I would take my commissions on the road with me and work on them during my required 30 minute breaks and whenever I didn’t have a load. I usually had an average of 5-7 commissions that people wanted painted. Having all the support is what brought me to one day quit to do it full time. I think the biggest obstacle was once I decided to open a gallery. I had to put renovations on credit and I went thru a tough financial time period. But it’s been so worth it and I keep growing so i know it was a good move even though it was risky
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
One of my dreams was to be in the Miami art scene so I submitted work to many galleries in Miami and got accepted into one. That gallery wanted just my abstract lines and since then they have now become my signature. So I believe that helps me sell. It’s something unique to me.
