We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jacqueline Real. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jacqueline below.
Alright, Jacqueline thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
My name is Jacqueline Real but I go by MISS J. Developing MISS J has been the creation of my songwriting craft. I suffered from mental health issues such as depression and anxiety and developing a persona to allow myself to feel free and express myself was the first step to getting to the level that I am at now. Fighting through “imposter syndrome” was another hurdle that allowed me to succeed. This ability to understand that my art is “my art” and my vision allowed me to feel fully released. This allows me to be fully open and vulnerable when I am writing and in the studio. Being open and able to adjust ideas in the moment create music that is fully flushed out and universal. Writing has become the way I express myself the most and it is how I connect to the world around me. A good song is a good song! And no matter who you are or where you come from, we can all be united by music. This has been my greatest ambition, unification, and every day I pinch myself that I am able to create something that helps others heal, just like I had to heal to move forward.
Jacqueline , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After overcoming a lot, I started signing Mariachi with my dad and it opened me back up to performing music live. Even though I was a working actress in LA and NYC, music was always my calling. It was the thing that made me feel the most alive. And Mariachi music, since I am Mexican/Colombian, was the key to reminding me that music is about emotion and intention, not perfection.
And I have channeled all that energy of growth from my original music. I started writing my own music after singing in a classic rock cover band for over a decade. And that exploration has made me the artist I am today. I strive to help to heal others with my music and provide a safe space for everyone to come and dance, rock out, and just let loose.
What makes my current band, MISS J & THE MISFITS unique is that there are no limits to our sound. From house music, big brass, to jam bands, and everything in between, Miss J & the Misfits is here to ignite a flame within everyone and help connect with everyone on a deeper level. I have been beyond lucky enough to be able to travel to other cities like Nashville to work with a lot of talented people and I am currently working on my first full length album there called #ROCKHOUSE that is scheduled to be released in the fall.
Once I fought through that imposter syndrome the success has come! Our latest single A LOVE WORTH SAVING was on the radio and hit #45 on Media Base and it feels like the sky is the limit right now. Because I have experienced so much, listeners can hear all of my influences in the music. This is what makes the music full and relatable. Check us out at MissJandtheMisfits.com for more!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One story is the current success of our latest single A LOVE WORTH SAVING. Because I wa able to work with incredible healers, advisors, etc. to fight through depression, I ended up writing the song A LOVE WORTH SAVING that speaks about how gratitude and finding the beauty in life helped me to rise up. But if I wouldn’t have gone through the hardships growth and awareness I would not have been able to write that song. And I wouldn’t be able to help others with it like the song does. I recently had a musician friend tell me that listening to that song helped him fight through an anxious moment and that is truly all that I dream of when writing songs. Also that song is not exactly my style of ROCK that I had intended to present and if I would have been stubborn about that I wouldn’t have wanted to release it for radio, but instead I was open and vulnerable and able to hear those telling me it was it!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The ARTISTS way! An incredible book and is one of the best journeys I have been on!
