We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jacqueline Dunn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jacqueline, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
So far, I’ve handled my own social media on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and TikTok. The results have been yielding quite a network of other copywriters and potential clients. I’m still going solo as a business, so I haven’t hired anyone yet. Once my business scales to a point where I need to structure my time better, I will consider hiring someone.
The insights I can share are to repurpose everything. If you write blogs, you can repurpose these for other social media posts in full or by breaking them up into bite-size posts. You can spread your reels literally across all channels, including YouTube.
Batching is also a time and stress saver when you either take a full day to batch content for the next 30 days or a few hours to create content for a week. It’s so worth it.
It’s totally cool to repost old post every now and then. You never know who might have missed something.
Jacqueline, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For the past 20-25 years, I’ve been in various roles in a marketing and investor relations capacity where I created and edited texts for websites, brochures, client reports and newsletters.
During the pandemic, I felt a calling with respect to copywriting and owning my own business. I dove head over heels into leveling up my skills through courses like The Copy Posse Launchpad created by Alex Cattoni (Digital Marketer of the Year 2022) and studied with Joanna Wiebe.
For almost 2 years it’s been a side-hustle and now it’s my full-time business. And I wouldn’t change a thing. I enjoy helping small, mid-size businesses and startups find and use their brand voice in the form of website copy, social media, email marketing and sales funnels.
I’m able to dive in deep into the customer’s mind and write the words to move them to use my client’s services or products to solve their problems, increasing my client’s customer base and profits.
My brand stands for authenticity and ethical copywriting with marketing strategy consulting as a comprehensive service. When you work with me, you get great communication, honest copy that’s on time and thorough editing to get it just right for your brand.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I think I illustrated my resilience a number of times throughout my life. It’s all about mindset.
In the last ten years, I got out of a long marriage with a narcissist, both of my parents died and I still have not found my soulmate, BUT I’m still happy and love life. All of this made me realize how short life is and that I need to make the best of it.
Which is why, at 55, I decided to quit my 9-5 job and turn my side-hustle into my own business. Was I scared? F yeah! Did I do it anyway? Double F yeah! Because why not?
Sure, imposter syndrome always plays a role, no matter what scary new thing you’re starting. But if you think about it too long, you won’t do it. So, I took the leap and haven’t looked back.
If I had not been patient or let fear get in the way of my decision, I probably would never have gone through with it.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Initially, I had (and still have) my personal accounts on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and TikTok.
Soon after starting my own business, I created business accounts for all accounts except LinkedIn, because they use your personal account. Nobody looks at any business accounts on LinkedIn.
I started using some of my blog posts from my website and repurposed them across my social media accounts in the form of reduced posts or carousels and sometimes reels. At first I mixed it up with personal posts to show my personality, but then decided to keep my personal and business posts separate.
The key, really, — and I’m also still learning to be consistent at this is to batch the posts (one day to produce posts for a month or a few hours to create content for one week), and repurpose and repost your content.
When I say consistent, I mean at least daily if not a few times per day. Also in the form of stories. Yes, it’s a bit of work, but if you can organize yourself or delegate it, it’s doable and worth it, saving you time to work on other tasks in your business.
The more you put yourself out there and create awareness around your brand, the more you’ll attract the clients you want and be able to scale your business.
