We recently connected with Jacqueline Coleman and have shared our conversation below.
Jacqueline , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I would have to say y biggest risk was dropping all my fear of failure and risking it all to go to school for Makeup and special FX. why would you say that was a risk, well I left home at a young age and I tried the whole college thing and it just wasn’t for me. I jumped into working as a performer for Universal studios and several other companies around the area. I was providing for my self and stopping all my work to go back to school was really scary, what if I sucked at it? What if its dumb to spend thousands of dollars to go to art school? Well that help me back fro going to school for about 4 years. when I finally decided to go i enrolled in school in January of 2020 not known that it was going to be the best decision of my life. I had the time to go to school without conscience and was able to be paid to go to school “kinda'”. I was able to learn extra sanitation and things that weren’t apart of the program before covid. I graduated top of my class in both Mordern Fx as well as Beauty Professionalism. I am forever grateful for my School VAMP (Vocational Academy of Makeup and Prosthetics) they commmunity it has created is unmatched the creatives i am surrounded by push me every day and I know that was wroth the risk. My School taught me everything from picking up a brush to creating full blown monster makeups. Now I have been apart of several features, commercials and short films. Winning awards for best production and even having my films played on Jet blue Flights all over the country. I also work for Universal Studios and Blue Whale productions on large productions such as Halloween Horror Nights and Seaworld’s Howl O Scream.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started out in the business in Highschool starting with Theatre at a young age, this drive me to go to collage as a theatre studies major. As I pursued performing arts, I realized that I cant do this forever…my talent can only take me so far. I was trying to find something that I wanted to do for forever what can I do for forever and find love and passion for it? I took many classes in collage searching for this. I took my first ever theatre makeup course and I came to life. I do not know why it never hit me before I have always been artisty fartsy. Then I was on the hunt for more more schooling because there was only one course at my college for makeup. Then I found Vamp in 2016 obsessed with the school I just could not afford to go and provide for my self and not work for 5 and half months. Then comes 2020 I bite the bullet and go and it was the best decision of my life.
I am a special FX makeup artist and Beauty Makeup Artist. I am skilled in prosthetic making, mold making as well as character dentures. I can do full glam to clean beauty. I have a special skill of connecting with people and making them feel comfortable in the chair having a performing background has played a huge role in understanding the business before diving into the other side.
I would have to say I am most proud of my skill in replication, it is something that I thrive in i can look at something and figure out how to replicate it easily, i focus on the little details and really strive to make it as exact as possible. Couple of my recent replications was a makeup from my favorite horror movies Thirteen Ghosts and from one of my big inspirations Richard a Snowmiser makeup. Biggest and hardest sculptures i have done and I am so proud of me flexing my skills and constantly growing in my skill.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
One of the most rewarding thing about makeup is watching someone light up when they see what you have created and cant wait to show it off and bring it to life. When someone is just as passionate about something you are passionate about. feeling the love that someone has for your art and truly feeling them selves in the makeup wither it is a creepy monster or a beautiful bride. Watching the light glow is truly my favorite.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I think Most creatives have that one thing they strive for. I know for me the end goal would be to be on a long running tv show like Star trek or Game of Thrones creating a family and creating art would be the dream. But i think what I try to focus on a smaller goals to not get discourage. My first goal out of School was to work at Halloween Horror Nights to hone my skills of airbrushing and almost gain the speed I need when I would go onto a set location. My next goal was to work on a short film and get the experience and see if I actually enjoy being on set and production. Fun Fact I love it. My next goal was to work on a feature, My first feature went on to win lots of rewards in the Film circuit and for the LGBTQ+ community in film. A next goal I had was to do a makeup demo at a con such a Mega-con or Spooky empire, and I have for both. my next big goal is to work on a union film/production in Atlanta and to work more towards getting in the makeup union. Creating a community and family in the industry has driven me to be better and grow every day and I cant wait to see where I go next.
