Hi Jacqueline, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
My career took a fascinating turn when my daughter ventured off to college, marking a pivotal moment. Suddenly, I found myself embracing multiple roles: a legal secretary/paralegal, and unexpectedly, a student again. As my daughter embarked on her college journey, I embarked on one of my own – enrolling in esthetician classes to master the art of skin care.
With newfound skills, I opened a small skincare studio and life seemed to have an exciting plan for me. But, life has its twists. Just as I was flourishing as an esthetician, my mother was diagnosed with dementia, reshuffling my priorities. Becoming her caregiver became my compass, steering me with profound responsibility and boundless love. In this role, I discovered that my esthetician background strengthened my resolve to care for her delicate skin.
Being my mother’s caregiver opened my eyes to the complexities of the human body, especially the significance of healthy skin. It’s amazing how caring for someone you love can teach you so much about life’s intricacies. Skincare transformed from mere aesthetics into a fundamental aspect of well-being, and this realization became my guiding light.
Then came an unexpected diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma in September 2021. What started as what I thought was a harmless stye turned out to be something much more serious – eyelid cancer. It was like a thunderbolt, shaking me into a new reality. I elected to have the tumor surgically removed before it could progress further. This experience showed me that skin cancer respects no boundaries – age, background, or skin color.
This wake-up call turned me into a passionate advocate for skin cancer awareness. I am on a mission to share the importance of sun protection, regular self-examinations, and seeking medical help promptly. My journey from being an esthetician to a caregiver to a cancer survivor and an oncology-trained esthetician led me to create Uniquely Effective Skincare. It’s not just a business; it’s a heartfelt endeavor to ensure that everyone has the tools and knowledge to safeguard their skin and well-being.
