We recently connected with Jacory Deshon and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jacory thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The first time I knew what I wanted to pursue and become as an actor, model, dancer, creator – I was 5 years old and I always knew that I wanted to be an entertainer. I was so into action movies and dancers. I always dancing around the house and I would use my wildest imaginations to pretend like I was playing a police officer or the good guy in a movie.
My Mother enrolled me in different dance classes and I would have to perform them at recitals with my dance team. I did a lot of summer classes at the YMCA. I was so shy and would dance in the back of the class, but my instructor would always make me move to the front of the class because I was a fast learner and he would use me to be an example to all the other student’s.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As I grew older, I began taking theatre arts and dance classes in high school. I performed in 2 high school plays and I became captain of the hip hop dance team and step team. We performed at school lunches, talent shows, basketball games, pep rallies and more.
In January 2009, my Mother encouraged me to sign up for KHOU’s Great Day Houston for the Beyoncés Single Ladies dance challenge with Debra Duncan. I signed up and I immediately got a call back. I was scheduled to appear to dance on the show the following week, and I ended up winning first place after competing against 9 other contestants.
After that, I knew I was destined for greatness, so I kept auditioning for more TV shows, dance competitions, and modeling gigs. In 2013, I auditioned for Bunim Murray’s show, Bad Boys Club and I got voted on the show, however things took a turn when the producer Natalie Nunn canceled the show before we even began filming.
I was devastated that the show got canceled, but looking back on it, the person I am today, I don’t think I would ever want to be on a show like that with bad language and violence. That’s just simply not my style. I enjoying loving on people and being the peacemaker, not starting or looking for trouble.
Between 2013-2016, I began modeling, and walked the runway in several fashion shows around Houston. One of my biggest runway shows was the Nzuri Hair Festival and Fashion Show where I made waves around my city and people started recognizing me more. During this time, I was enrolled at Lone Star College where I got into a few more theatre arts plays. At this time, I also received my license to become a certified Zumba fitness instructor. I taught Zumba at several YMCA centers, Dynamic Fitness at the Galleria, performed at several Zumbathon shows, held classes in local parks, and taught classes to students and staff at my college. While attending college, I received 3 scholarships, became student of the month twice, and just overall made a huge impact in the Lone Star College system with my personality, talents, and overall popularity all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
In 2022-2023, I was selected to appear on CBS Let’s Make A Deal where I filmed 8 episodes and won an all expense trip to Chicago. I also became a voiceover actor and I started doing voiceovers for small businesses and different companies as well.
In spring 2023, I auditioned and partnered with Southwest Airlines as the voice of their Spring 2023 commercial. This commercial was played on HULU and Netflix. You can also find the commercial on YouTube as well.
Today, I’m so excited to announce that I’ve officially been cast to my first real deal movie. I can’t say much about it at this time because we are still in the process of filming, but I can say the anticipated release date will be set for October 2025. I am playing a small role in this film – I am not starring in it, but you will know me when you see me. My character and role is a small part, but it’s very important in the film. I’m way too geeked, so please be on the look out for my first horror film next year.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
My most rewarding aspect of being n entertainer, artist, and creator is literally loving what I do. Each day when I wake up, I’m truly happy because I know it’s going to be a good day. Each moment whether I’m on set, in the studio doing voiceover work, or doing acting skits on TikTok, I’m truly happy. I know this is what I was born to do because I feel the joy each time I’m doing these things deep within. Using my creative abilities and techniques to entertain others and put a smile on their faces, is truly priceless for me, and I honestly wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There is a resource that I wish I had took advantage of earlier in my career and creative journey and that’s taking acting classes sooner. I wish that I had got the complete skill and knowledge down before I got older. I’m only 34 years old now, but I wish I was encouraged to take that part of my career more seriously just for the credit and credentials. I believe my talents speaks for itself and I’m a natural actor and entertainer by heart, but it doesn’t hurt to get that foundation grounded for what you’re most passion about. Either way, I’m truly happy in the end and I don’t regret anything at all. I believe everything happens in Gods perfect timing. If it were meant for me back then, it would’ve happened. I take my journey step by step. I don’t run because I never want to trip, and fall. But on the bright side of tripping and falling is that you get to get right back up, dust yourself off, and try again.
