We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jacobia Boston a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jacobia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I hope that my legacy of candle making becomes something of the past but valuable to the present. Though there are so many large candle companies and people make candles, I want people to experience a brand of love, hard work, passion, and Culture from the fragrance they choose to receive to the lighting it provides in a dark places. It will serve as a constant reminder that we all have entered into the darkest places yet we still have light to give. I hope that my legacy will be a reminder of Jesus Christ, hope and endless possibilities to all who come from where I’m from and have passed through where I’ve been.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into this business after experiencing a great deal of anxiety. Something I’ve never experienced in such a great deal from choices I’ve made that weren’t so clear in understanding the process. I asked God to show me how the mental health and substance abuse patients I worked with felt so that I could give the proper help and dedication. I started to have anxiety so bad but it was God’s way of giving understanding. God told me to start a candle business for my peace and it turned out to bring the focus and peace I needed and everyone should get a Culture Couture Experience. I am most proud of setting my mind to do something and actually watching it come to pass. We’re still a small business but I can see the light and only wish to pass it on.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My entire life shows resilience. The definition is having the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties;toughness. Being that I was abandoned as a child and left to fend for myself have created a character and person of overcoming. I now know the only thing standing in my way is my personal fears of success which will come with failures. But I know that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. That be will never leave me nor forsake me even to the end of the age. And for that I push forward to overcome and conquer the things that come against my willingness to succeed.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
There’s be many lessons I had to unlearn but truth be told it’s exactly that what it is a lesson. But specifically I have had to unlearn that people will show you support, that people want to see you grow, and that your business will spring forth overnight. That is not true. It requires very hard work, longs days and nights, and resilience. A push through like no other to work for yourself the way we’ve been taught to work for others.
