Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to JaCobe King. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
JaCobe, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my first EP I released in 2018, “Consonance.” The word consonance is a musical term that means a combination of notes which are in harmony with each other due to the relationship between their frequencies. The EP is comprised of 3 songs. Each song represents moments and lessons in my life that worked together to bring me to a state of peace and harmony. This was the first time I ever co-produced the music for a project as well. I came up with the chords and vocal produced the records myself alongside producer, Corey Houston. I first got the idea for the project 4 years prior, while I was away in college at Jacksonville University in Florida. There I felt stifled and couldn’t make the music I wanted. The drive to start and complete the project made me move back home to Atlanta, where the process of recording the project was very natural and easy. On 11/9/18, I released the project gaining large positive reception. I also had a listening/birthday party for the project on my birthday 11/16/18 with a great turn out.
JaCobe, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been singing ever since I was 2 years old. My mom first heard me singing along to Exhale (Shoop Shoop) by Whitney Houston in my car seat. She noticed something about my voice that she wanted to make sure I noticed myself and take seriously. Over the course of my life I attended performing arts schools such as DeKalb Elementary School of the Arts and DeKalb School of the Arts (with alumni like Baby Tate, Donald Glover, and Lloyd). There I took vocal lessons and honed in on my craft doing musical theater and developed my ear for harmonies by singing in the choir. For college, I attended Jacksonville University and graduated from Georgia State University. During college I got the opportunity to open for JoJo and Mario which was a great professional opportunity for me and something I’m most proud of. I would like to grow my visibility on social media by working with other artists and making consistent and music.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I’m really striving to become a mainstream singer/songwriter, performer, and entrepreneur in the entertainment industry. Mainly, to be a beacon of hope for young black LGBTQ+ creatives and show them that they can achieve their goals despite the odds that are up against them.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to be a form of escapism for people. Escapism from the difficulties of life.
