We were lucky to catch up with Jacob Wimsatt recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacob , thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Our mission is to create meaningful places for people to live and work. We wanted to create an architecture firm that uses innovation and creativity to help people achieve their construction goals. We believe intense collaboration, sharing of ideas, and thoughtful action produces architecture people will cherish for generations. Brian and I started our journey fighting the status quo and small-town politics to provide a better design quality that puts user experience, sustainability, and thoughtful architecture in line with profit margins. Our journey has led us to provide thoughtful architecture all over the Tennessee, Kentucky, and North Carolina regions.
Jacob , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up on a farm in northwestern Kentucky and have always enjoyed creating things and solving problems. On the farm we often found ourselves inventing solutions to everyday issues as equipment would break down and tasks would need completion. From learning to weld to playing with Legos this understanding of how things work and how things were assembled matured into thinking of how elements can be manipulated to create space and architecture. This passion for art and science led me to my studies at WKU and then eventually UT in Knoxville. After receiving my master’s degree from UT and getting through my internship, Brian and I teamed up to create the company you see today.
Today, I am a licensed architect in several states and act now as our firm’s marketing principal. I am involved in not only the day-to-day design and BIM operation but the digital and analog relationships of CW Architects. Having the opportunity to create structures for clients and help build my own company is truly a dream in the making.
I am one person of a team of elite problem solvers and passionate architects and designers. What sets us apart from others is our ability to provide innovative solutions to complex architectural problems while maintaining a high degree of responsiveness and intense collaboration. Complex architectural problems range from master planning resort developments with complex architectural programs and forms to multi-level renovations with sensitive historic value and new age attitudes towards new codes and programs.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
As creative professionals, we often find ourselves in an artist dilemma. We can very easily get into a situation choosing between good money versus good design. An artist’s work is never done and can always be improved. All too often architects are burning the midnight oil making much less than they deserve for the sake of good design. Great architects do not pursue architecture for money. They are often driven by a passion for creating architecture.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Our understanding of the importance of relationships, collaboration, and being responsive to client needs. People work with people, not logos and tag lines. Maintaining an intense work ethic and a thirst to truly help people achieve their construction goals no matter the obstacle instills trust and reputation.
