We were lucky to catch up with Jacob Walton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jacob , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
What I think it takes to be successful is just being yourself. Being genuine is the most important part of being a content creator. People are able to see right through others being fake on the internet. I don’t really worry too much about trying to be a creator. I’m just myself. I’m honest with my followers, my takes, opinions, thoughts, all honest. When it comes down to it, people don’t come to your page to see content. They come to see you. So if I’m playing Pokemon, or Digimon, or even covering a new upcoming game you are getting the same person. Anyone who can stay true to themselves can have success.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
While my name is Jacob Walton, most people just call me Walt! I am a Pokemon professor and content creator with my main focus being Pokemon. You can find me dabbling in most trading card games, exploring and finding new fun things to play. I’m a true 90s kid at heart who just loves all things nostalgia.
I started off just as a collector on Instagram selling and trading cards. Once the pandemic happened, I started actually playing the trading card game for the first time and shared that journey. The content was just me picking up new product, or trades, following me to locals, going to bigger events like conventions, regionals, and even North American International Championship. That’s when I started streaming on Twitch. One of the things I love about tcg are the people, so Twitch was the best place for me to interact with people while I opened product or played or whatever! I did eventually join TikTok and that was were the madness happened! I would post similar content to my Instagram and get thousands of views and hundreds of followers. Again, it was just another fun place to interact with the tcg community. There are so many people who are interested in playing some sort of trading card game. Some feel like they are too old, not enough people to play with, or just simply don’t know how. The biggest thing for me is that these games are for everyone. I didn’t start playing until a few years ago so I’m always trying to help and encourage people to try.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of creating content is when people tell me that they finally started playing the trading card games because of me. I’m not one for checking my like or view count. I’m always trying to engage with people in person or in the comments. I make the content for fun but when people are motivated enough to step out of their comfort zones and try something new that’s where I feel like I have done something good.
I’m by no means the best player even in my local community but I’m someone people go to, to ask questions or get my thoughts on something. It means so much that they see me as a someone they can trust. I’m always open and encouraging others to step out of their box. I’m still learning myself as I haven’t been playing for that long, but I think me being so open about that helps other join too.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The biggest goal in doing all of this is growing the trading card game (Pokemon, Digimon, etc.) community with new people and keeping it fun and positive. These games are supposed to be fun so that’s what I promote. When I started going to locals, everyone was super welcoming and willing to help. I just want to replicate that warmth and helpfulness for others locally or online who may be hesitant to play.
