We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jacob Trumble a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacob, thanks for joining us today. Alright, let’s take a stroll on memory lane, back to when you were an apprentice or intern. What’s a memorable story from that time that you can share with us?
Apprenticeships/mentorships in my mind are one of the most crucial things for someone in my field of home inspections. For me personally, I reached out to the top inspectors in my area to ask if they would be willing to “take me under their wing” so to speak and teach me the ins and outs of actually working in the field. I ended up training under Scott Mack and to keep a long story short, I truthfully owe every ounce of success to him because he taught me techniques, terminology to use, how to find clients and build a network just to name a few. He taught me about the industry overall and probably most importantly how inspecting in different regions of the state affect how you should approach each inspection differently.
Jacob, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Jacob Trumble, owner of Poplar Home inspections which is a home inspection company serving the Western New York area. I’ve owned Poplar Home Inspections and have been offering residential home inspections since January of 2021.
I think what makes me unique as compared to other inspectors in my area is that on top of being a licensed home inspector, I’m also a licensed real estate agent in the state of New York which has helped me to really understand the clients problems and concerns through the entire home buying process. Being an agent has also helped me to understand some of the obstacles and stresses an agent can come across representing a client in a real estate transaction so by being able to see and understand where everyone in the transaction is mentally, I feel that I’m very much able to make one of the most stressful components of the process, the inspection, very seamless for everyone involved.
Something I’m very proud of is my time in the United States Army. My time in service I feel has adequately prepared me to better serve clients with the skills I gained. Specifically my ability to pay attention to detail in situations that can have huge repercussions for not only myself and my business, but for those who put their entire trust in me to inspect a home that they may be raising a family in for years to come
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
My absolute best client source would be real estate agents. I work almost hand in hand with real estate agents and love to work with them to try and give our client the best real estate buying process we can!
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I really dove head first into doing home inspections and didn’t have a whole ton of money when I started the company. I only used my own personal savings from past jobs and the army. I used most of my savings to start this and while I wouldn’t advise that, I don’t regret it because it ended up working out in the end.
