We were lucky to catch up with Jacob Teague recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jacob, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
When I started HubCity Graphics, we originally started because I have background experience as a graphic designer and I wanted a creative outlet that would allow me to take care of my family, as well as provide for the needs of my family. So I started turning my art into prints, stickers, tumblers, and whatever else I could create. One of the designs I had got really popular, and we started to need to produce a sticker in mass quantities.
I started to look for vendors to bulk produce stickers, and was very unhappy with the pricing of vendors and what they were charging for custom stickers. I knew that I was producing them a lot cheaper. I took the leap and invested into a commercial printer. It was at that time, my wife said, “Jacob, you should start to outsource bulk stickers as a service that you offer. And that’s when we really began. I ran a really cheap ad on facebook to try and get new clients. I already knew how much everything would cost, from the vinyl, to printing, to shipping them out, so it was really easy to price everything in a way that was fair to my clients, as well as a fair profit margin for me.

Jacob, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I provide a low cost solution to getting bulk stickers created. It takes that hassle out of producing them on your own, and we are really proud to be able to offer this service nationwide. I love seeing the creative work that others make, and being able to take that idea and turn it into a sticker is such an amazing experience for me, and for my clients.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
For funding, both me and my wife were working full time for a food delivery service as a freelancer. Every time we made a trip, we saved a little of it. Starting small with no expectations was the best way I could figure to expand, as we didnt want to take out a loan and pay back interest.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Our best source of clients has been word of mouth. Sure, ads do their work, but the word of mouth clients that are talking about us has made us expand a lot faster than an ad could, and a lot cheaper.
