We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jacob Rodier a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jacob, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I’ve been obsessed with film ever since I was a kid. Growing up, all I did was go to the movies. I became engulfed with everything revolving around film. There was a point in my life when I was watching a movie a day, trying to absorb as much influence as I could. Even today I try to go to the theater at least once a week. In high school when it came time to start thinking about college and what I wanted to study, I knew it was going to be something related to film. I ended up majoring in Digital Media and Design at the University of Connecticut. In college, I joined the film club where I started making as many short films as I could. I learned so much about the filmmaking process and what it takes to create a film. I fell in love with the process and knew this was something I wanted to pursue professionally in some form. Whether that be short films, music videos, or commercials, I was in love with the process of creating art and knew I wouldn’t be satisfied doing anything else.
Jacob, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jacob Rodier and I am a filmmaker born and raised in Connecticut. I am currently traveling between New York, Toronto, and LA because I love to travel and can’t make up my mind. I have directed, filmed, and edited a variety of music videos, short films, and commercials throughout my career so far. I also work as a VFX artist for a variety of projects. I love creating art that has surrealist and striking imagery. My goal is always to create an immersive sense of awe and wonder through powerful visuals, music, and stories. I love to work with other artists that are just as passionate as I am to keep creating and keep pushing.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The first thing is being able to take these ideas and imagery that have been stuck in my head and translate them into something real. It’s so rewarding and satisfying working with a team of passionate creatives who are all focused on the same crazy ideas and working hard to actually bring that vision to life. For music videos specifically, my goal is to always take the song at hand and elevate it to a new level with powerful visuals. When people watch one of my music videos and tell me it made them like the song even more, that’s the best thing I could ask for.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal in my creative endeavors right now is to just keep working on bigger and better projects where I can push the limits of what I think can be done on film, while also working with and bringing up all my talented creative friends on the way.
