Jacob , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I think all the time about what it would be like going back to work as an employee. Each and every day as a business owner really test my patience and perseverance. It’s literally living out the phrase of feast or famine some days. It’s absolutely phenomenal and great/amazing. Some days it can be an absolute pain in the butt! I guess what really gets the stress going Is that the amount of assets that you’ve got to keep in motion and keep working is just mind-boggling compared to just being employee where you just show up and use what you’ve been given and go work. In landscape maintenance and in the trucking, there’s so much machinery tools parts, and equipment that goes into just for filling one job that to keep that all in working order up to government regulation, etc. is such a pain.
The hardest part about being a business owner is growth. I have so much work and not enough help to get it done on both aspects of the business. I find that people with needs for transportation can’t be fulfilled because I don’t have the manpower. And I find I have so much landscape work to fulfill, but I just don’t have the manpower to fulfill it. The hardest part is just finding reliable help that you can grow with and also treat them right so they feel like they’re growing with you.
The growing pains of being a self-employed business owner are tough. These growing pains make me think of going back to being an employee, but I just have such a passion for what I do for work that I can’t even fathom going back to working for someone else, and being told what to do.
Jacob , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started this company as a lawn care business originally. I love going out mowing lawns, leaving stripes and decorative designs in the landscape for customers. I grew up from their solving problems that customers had with the upkeep of their landscaping, their yards for their commercial and residential properties in Utah though the winter we don’t have very much landscape maintenance. There is snow removal but it’s just not something that really strikes me as a passion and it’s so difficult to predict the storms and how much work you’ll have. So I went off and got my CDL from there. I started driving for a company and realize that there’s so much risk in trucking for those that are willing to take the risk and know how to manage in business and keep assets afloat that it could be a very lucrative opportunity. I started my Hot shot trucking company under the same umbrella of the landscape company to help a lot of my landscape contractors move equipment and necessary materials for their jobs when they needed. This option of having a reliable last second transport to get your materials across the state or across the country when needed is what really sent me a part.
Because of these two different yet, Hand in Hand operations, I set myself up to help out contractors, residence and commercial property owners in my area to either help move their products, help complete their jobs, or help keep their landscapes look great to set their image to their customers.
I took the big risk in the year of 2022 and bought hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment to fulfill these jobs. Many thought I was crazy doing so but it has paid off in so many ways and build such great friendships proven to myself that taking a risk is worth it if done right, on top of that, I don’t feel like I work anymore I go to work actually enjoying what I do and getting to see the jobs that I complete make customers Happy.
When I took these risk to start the company, a lot of people thought it was “daddy’s money” but they didn’t see the amount of life savings and large risk really putting everything I had out on the table to go out in chasing my dream. So I took it to heart when people told me that I was crazier and I would fall on my face or that it wouldn’t work out, because I really was putting everything I had on the table to chase the dream, and to see it pay off and such a rewarding way really helps me keep pursuing the dream I started.
I’m just proud of myself and my support my friends family for believing in me. That no matter how young or small or whatever my company is that just putting forth the effort and the sweat and working hard every day really does payoff you get out what you put in in life so if you put a maximum effort like I showed myself that I did, you can get out maximum rewards and it goes for my customers too that when I put forth my best foot they get the best service as possible and I love seeing that as well.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
The lawn care was my side hustle. I got that growing and going so much to where I didn’t have time to fulfill my full-time job as a truck driver so I quit driving truck to go and continue my lawn care. I was making more money to support myself, and doing work that was closer to home, and more fulfilling to myself, once I have decided to grow a second source income, I started the trucking company of my own for Hotshot to help other customers and I saw in need of my services running these two gigs together with the small part-time helpers I have in the lawn care is very stressful, but I know I have a stable source of income that I’ve built completely on my own that once started out as a side hustle just grew overtime with consistent effort into a full-time gig .
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I give my clients some swag. Just hats beanies shirts decals things with my logo on that they will use day today to remind them of my business and or also the small bits of free advertising. I also visit my clients from time to time and bring them swag and gift cards to local restaurants. On top of this I call and text my clients to keep up see how they’re doing in life if there’s anything that I need outside of work that I can maybe help out with or give advice on. I found a lot of my clients grew into more friends and family then just clients with this connection strategy I used.
