We were lucky to catch up with Jacob Morrise recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jacob, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with a hypothetical question – if it were up to you, what would you change about the school or education system to better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career?
I have worked not only as a successful product designer, but also with college students studying product design. It has been one of the highlights of my career to coach students through some of their first projects. some of the best things for a student to experience during college are these hands on, commercial projects. For many engineers most of what they learn in college will not be used on the job, however, experience with actual projects and actual customers will be highly beneficial in becoming successful at a new position out of school.

Jacob, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Jacob Morrise. I have been working in the product design field for over a dozen years. As a product designer, I have been able to help many people get their product concepts designed and into the market. I have worked on many consumer, industrial, medical, and aerospace products, including several high profile products, such as the mechanical design for the first Ring doorbell.
As the owner of Morrise Products, I focus primarily on consumer products. With dozen of clients, I have been able to get many unique and innovative products completed and into the market quickly and at low cost. I am constantly looking for new clients, ideas, and partners to bring new innovative products to the world.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source I have found for new clients from those I have worked with in the past. I often heard in school that “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” This sentiment always bothered me, as it seemed an excuse for many to not work hard, because they knew influential people. For me, the sentiment is more “building trust builds business.”

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
For a small business, a home equity line of credit can go a long way.
