We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jacob Elbaum a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jacob, appreciate you joining us today. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
At some point, every business owner realizes they need to optimize their website. But for one of our clients, an e-commerce store spending over $400,000 every month on paid advertising, the opportunity to improve their website was too big to ignore. The website was a mess, with poorly designed pages that were confusing for customers to navigate. I knew that we could do better.
Instead of simply suggesting A/B testing, our conversion optimization team decided to revamp the entire website. Over two months, we implemented several different changes that we knew would align with best practices and improve the customer experience. After the revamp, we were able to increase the conversion rate by a staggering 30%. Overnight, this added multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars to the client’s business.
For this client, the results were nothing short of spectacular. By optimizing their website with Shivook, they were able to maximize the impact of their paid advertising campaigns and increase their bottom line. As for Shivook, we were thrilled to see such a huge improvement in such a short amount of time. It’s a testament to the power of conversion rate optimization and the importance of investing in your digital storefront.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been working in the marketing space for over a decade now, and about four years ago, I was a growth marketer at Voice123, a company with a lot of traffic due to being a legacy brand. As a growth marketer, my focus was on generating the most possible revenue and growth, which led me to focus on conversion rate optimization rather than just driving more traffic. To do this, I had to learn the necessary skill set, so I reached out to about 18 different mentors who helped me better understand the process. After practicing A/B testing and conversion optimization for Voice123 and gaining a better understanding of how it all works, I parted ways with the company and started offering the same services as a freelancer on Upwork.
About three months into that process, I realized that there was a significant demand for conversion rate optimization within e-commerce, which led me to focus on making that my main focus. I then started an agency called Shivook, which is a team of experts focused on conducting top-notch UX conversion research and using that research to come up with impactful ideas for the stores we work on. While we drive impact in many different ways, sometimes through A/B testing and sometimes by providing valuable feedback to the business even if it’s not directly related to conversion, we primarily work with businesses that spend more in paid advertising and need to be more efficient with the traffic that’s already coming to their website.
Shivook is different from other conversion optimization agencies in that we don’t solely focus on conversion optimization. While that is our core service, we take a very consultative approach and offer input that can help improve the business across any part of the business if we feel like we understand it at a deeper level due to our experience and background in e-commerce. We’ll even argue or fight over something if we feel strongly about it, all in the name of helping our clients succeed at the highest level. We always maintain a positive relationship with our clients, which allows for open conversations and debates about how to improve their business.
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
Certainly, I can share a story about a time when I almost missed family payroll. Before I started my last job as a growth marketer at Voice123, I was freelancing and trying to find my niche. However, things became more challenging when I found out that my wife was pregnant. The need to earn a stable income became paramount, and I had to look for a job quickly. During my job search, I was rejected several times, and I almost took a sales job that paid 80% less than what I eventually got paid as a growth marketer (which was also quite low relative of other growth marketers). However, I got lucky when Voice123 contacted me for an interview, and I was eventually offered the job. It was a great fit, and I was able to provide for my family. During the interview process, I had to complete a 24-hour experiment, and I even spent $50 to prove my dedication to the company. Although I was one of thousands of applicants, I got the job, and it was a launchpad to where I am today.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
Certainly, fostering brand loyalty and maintaining strong relationships with Shivook clients requires consistent effort and dedication. At Shivook, we prioritize regular communication with our clients and strive to provide a positive experience throughout the entire process. This involves both following up with clients at random intervals to check in on their progress and making sure that we deliver on our promises before we even sign a contract. It’s essential that we communicate any changes in plans or scope of work in a clear and transparent manner, and that we are receptive to feedback from clients. In addition to regular follow-ups, we also schedule weekly or biweekly calls with clients to ensure that we remain aligned and that everyone is on the same page. Ultimately, we believe that establishing a genuine relationship with clients is critical to building brand loyalty and fostering long-term partnerships.
