We were lucky to catch up with Jacob Covell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jacob, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
I think I often get misunderstood/mischaracterized on the internet because of my brash, bold, “loud” persona that I put on for the internet that makes me look like this a**hole who talks too much s***. But I just love making people feel emotions, make them talk and it’s a great way to sell yourself. It’s interesting to see though, when people meet me in real life and they’re like wow you’re much more quieter or different in person than you are on the internet. Which sometimes is a great thing to me because it shows you can’t just judge everything you see on the internet.

Jacob, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Jacob Covell, I do ASL music covers, I do vlogs, I do random funny videos, I like to talk my s*** and hype people up. I always was good at social media/editing but kinda just strayed away from it til I saw this market was missing in social media with deaf creators/influencers who could make it big through social media and my goal here is to show kids like me when I was younger, that you can do and be anything you want. I am going to be the biggest entertainer in the world and I want to show the kids who grew up like me, hard of hearing, deaf or even hearing, that you can do anything you put your mind to. Never let anybody tell you otherwise. I’ve had some people who follow me refer to me as “the modern day Robin Hood” which I think really struck a chord with me and I will always carry that with me and help inspire and elevate the next generation.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Back in Jan i was “cancelled” by the deaf community by a hearing person for copying the same content he had done years prior. It was a learning experience for sure – but the best thing that came from it was that I never faltered, I never fell off or gave up. I kept going, I kept getting bigger and I kept getting back up. I showed the community that even tho they were hating on me, talking very badly about me, I was never going to let that stop me. A lot of people in the community showed how they felt about me from one simple mistake – and I took that and let it fuel me and I am only getting started.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding is having people reach out to me constantly and tell me how I really inspired them or said/did something that really empowered them or felt like they could relate to me. It makes me feel incredibly good knowing that there are people out there that I can help inspire or empower. Growing up I didn’t really have someone like that – so my goal is to be someone like that for the next generation and knowing the impact I make already – really strikes a chord in my heart and only motivates me to keep going and keep working for the kids and future generations.
