We were lucky to catch up with Jaclyn Waggoner recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaclyn , thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I got into this work because of my own personal experiences. I definitely wasn’t as a kid like I want to work in the lactation field! It came after having my own children and working through our own struggles and hurdles. When I had my oldest in a rural town in New Mexico we had a lot of breastfeeding problems. He was tongue tied, we dealt with latching issues, pain, slow weight gain, supply issues, you name it and as supportive as my family was, nobody had nursed their babies in several generations and really knew how to give me the support I needed. This is when something clicked in me and I was like postpartum moms need so much more community and support. I became a La Leche League Leader and started up a Group in the four corners because I really felt called to build a community of support for other mothers so nobody would have to walk through their postpartum journey without that support. It was really a special place and time in my life. We moved and then the pandemic hit and all the trainings went online I decided to become a Certified Lactation Counselor and really pursue helping and supporting families a little deeper. I always say that I’m so grateful for my breastfeeding struggles because it led me to where I am now and I know that if I hadn’t had any hurdles to overcome I likely would have never landed in this field.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started off during the pandemic and wanting to do virtual prenatal breastfeeding classes. Anyone anywhere could take them with me virtually. I put everything I wish I would have known in these classes plus everything I had learned from my own personal experiences and my CLC training. In time I started getting requests for virtual and in home consults as well. I started offering those about a year ago and it has been such a wonderful addition! I feel so grateful every-time a new family welcomes me into their sacred postpartum space. I know that bringing someone into your bubble is an honor and a privilege and my only hope is to help them feel more encouraged and empowered about their journey by the time I walk out their doors.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Truly I think it is just word of mouth! Once I developed a few really successful client relationships they have been so wonderful in sharing my name around the community and building that community support, which just continues to grow.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Yes I definitely try to! I know there are lots of options and places people can go after I visit with them, but one really neat thing I offer is free Motherhood Meetups where they can continue to grow their postpartum community and have continued support along their feeding journey.
