We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jaclyn King. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jaclyn below.
Hi Jaclyn, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
I manage my own social media and as a result have transitioned into a content creator along side my organizing business. It has been a natural progression for me. The process of organizing is very visual and I often utilize my own home and space as well as professional projects to showcase what I do. I am a one woman show, and as of now, it has made sense for me to manage and be in charge of all aspects of my business. I have however, recently joined a great network for content creators- the Authentic Creators Network, which has provided great insight and guidance into all things social media and has been a big value add to my process.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Jaclyn King and I am a professional organizer, mom, and content creator. I own an organizing business, Sort of Space, which I operate out of Norwalk, CT and create social content under the handle @sortofspace. I got started in the organizing industry about six years ago, after closing a long chapter working in private residences in New York City as a household manager, family assistant, and nanny. A lot of what I did in those roles, was create structures, physical and logistical, to support families. I decided to start my business so rather than helping one family at a time, I could bring my skills to many people who would benefit.
I’ve since moved out of the city and started my own family and with that comes lots of transition. I recently had my second baby and am doing less in person work at the moment. While I’ve been on leave I’ve invested more time showcasing my home projects on social media in an effort to encourage and guide others who may not have the resources to hire an organizer and just need some tips or inspiration to try it themselves. I fully believe our space affects our mood and overall well being, and as a Mom with young kids I am all too familiar with the enormous amount of *stuff* that comes with having kids. My goal is to help other women and families feel a better sense of control over their stuff, calm in their space, and empowered to tackle it themselves or encouraged to reach out for help. Particularly, in the midst of the beautiful chaos that is raising young children.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Like so many business owners, the pandemic really required me to shift. My work until that point was almost exclusively in person. And unlike many other jobs, you can’t automate or remotely organize space. It is a hands on job! During that time I developed some virtual offerings, including DIY plans, guided consultations, and really began leaning into creating content as a way to communicate with my online community and expand my own perceptions of my brand. I am not only an organizer. I am a mother, a new homeowner, a DIYer, and all of those things inform the content I put out.
Lately, my focus has been on showcasing the organization and improvement projects I have been undertaking in my own home. My organizational craft and business was very focused on small space living in the city, and plenty of people live in smaller homes and need creative ideas and inspiration for making their homes feel beautiful and more functional at the same time! The pandemic changed the way many of us use our homes, and I really enjoy showing people ways to make smaller spaces work, especially if they don’t necessarily have the means to hire someone like me for help,
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I am still very much in the process of building my audience on social and to be honest, it is a lot of work, especially if social media is in addition to your business, not your primary business itself. Finding other creators and accounts who make content that resonates with you and is in line with your own business and content is important. Interacting with those accounts regularly is a great way to start growing your own accounts. Real engagement is the most valuable aspect of growing in social media and there is no better way to garner that than through using your, true, authentic voice. You want people to feel connected to the message you’re putting out and if you aren’t clear on that, or try to emulate someone else instead, your people won’t be able to find you.
I am a solo entrepreneur. I am my business, so my personal voice and my business voice are very much aligned. I have found that I gravitate toward other creators and businesses that operate that way on social media as well. Joining the Authentic Creator’s Network has really helped me hone in on what I want to communicate in my social channels and given great insights and tips on how to propel forward in an ever changing social media landscape.
