We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jaclyn Haugen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jaclyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
The transition from a manager in the marketing corporate world to an independent entrepreneur was both exciting and intimidating. On one hand, I had the freedom to pursue whatever opportunities I wanted in a new business and could work on projects that excited me; on the other, I now had the responsibility of keeping all aspects of the business afloat – from sales to marketing to operations, (gasp!) I would oversee it all. To successfully launch DME Digital Marketing Experts, I decided to do extensive market research into what services and solutions clients were looking for in order to provide value that wasn’t already available in the market. In my research, I found that numerous small businesses were being overcharged by large marketing agencies for services that I could customize and focus for small business owners at a fraction of the cost. Sure, there were plenty of marketing agencies out there, but their cost was way too much for small business owners that have a tight budget.
I also put a lot of thought into pricing strategies and how best to sell my services while still making a profit. After months of planning, DME Digital Marketing Experts was officially launched with a few select clients that already believed in me and my talents (I leaned heavily on my natural market). After a rocky and SLOW start and many revamps of my pricing structure, the word about DME Digital Marketing Experts finally started to spread and more clients/referrals sought out my expertise. Years later now, when reflecting upon this journey from idea to execution, I can truly say that it has been worth every step along the way.
No longer do I have someone telling me what needs to be done and I no longer feel caught in the daily grind of corporate America; instead, there is simply nothing quite like knowing I am working for myself, and my future success relies solely on my own hard work and dedication! With each new challenge comes a sense of pride as well as an accomplishment that is empowering and motivating all at once; something which can only be experienced first-hand by anyone who takes on entrepreneurship themselves! I firmly believe that if one has ever dreamed about starting their own business, you absolutely should go after it! Not only will you learn invaluable lessons along the journey, but you may even find immense joy in being your own boss!

I am Jaclyn Haugen and I enjoy the title of a jack-of-all-trades as my role can change daily from business owner to creative director, to copywriter, to digital advertiser, to social media manager, to marketing strategist, and oh-yes graphic and website design. So how did this all come to be?
After spending a decade working for a medium-sized company, Choice Wireless, and learning the ropes of marketing, I earned my position as Director of Marketing and specialized in social media and digital advertising. Choice Wireless was a subsidiary of ATNI and lent the opportunity for me to get hands-on experience building a marketing department, leading teams, working with ad agencies, print vendors, merchandising, and in digital design.
What happened next was the classic case of “Is the grass greener on the other side?”. I always wanted to explore corporate marketing, so I applied and landed a role as the General Manager of Marketing at DISH Network in Englewood, Colorado. I experienced much success with the company and was able to lead a team specializing in Customer Retention. My team was responsible for making data-driven decisions for every dollar spent on mailers, emails, and websites designed to retain the existing customer base.
From there, I decided to pursue my passion and focus solely on my existing marketing business that I opened in 2017 called DME, Digital Marketing Experts. I now enjoy helping small business owners reach their marketing goals. My business offers all traditional and digital marketing solutions at affordable rates. I hold a BA in political science from the University of Colorado and continues to study the latest trends in the marketing industry.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
By far, the most effective strategy for growing my clientele is to exceed their expectations and provide top-notch marketing services each and every time. I make sure that they are not only getting what they were promised but even more than they expected. I take the extra step to go above and beyond when delivering services to ensure that my clients receive the highest quality, personalized attention possible. Additionally, I strive to ensure that all my clients feel valued and appreciated because this helps build loyalty in our relationship. A loyal client base can be a powerful asset as these customers will continue to use my services long-term and also help spread my message via word-of-mouth referrals.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe I built my reputation with my clients by truly listening to their marketing goals and making tailored plans unique to their business needs to help them achieve them. This includes informing them about any additional benefits that can be derived from using my services such as reduced costs on other products or services, improved return on investment (ROI), greater market reach with digital ad options, improved brand recognition, etc. By doing so, it not only adds more value to their experience with me but also allows them to leverage my services for further optimization of their own businesses.
