Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jaclene Mathis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jaclene thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission is to help others help themselves. As a young mother, I received a lot of support from family and friends. Their support made things easier for me. When I become an occupational therapy assistant that was my motto because the help I received from them gave me the ability to help others. I realized that it’s the same motto for everything I do. I love helping people rather it’s educating, mentoring, enhancing the beauty of their hair, helping them purchase and/or sell their home, etc. I believe in life we all provide and/or receive help from someone at some point.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Jaclene Mathis is a mother of 5 and is a native Charleston SC. As a young girl, I grew up around hard-working women and that inspired me to become a serial entrepreneur with an insatiable passion for real estate and braiding. My life has been a thrilling roller coaster ride, marked by the pursuit of opportunities and the relentless drive to create something extraordinary.
Since a young girl, I’ve harbored an unwavering desire to make a positive impact and lend a helping hand to those in need. At a young age, I started to dig into my talents for braiding hair. At first, I started doing family and friends’ hair, but as the years went on and I learned more braiding techniques, I started expanding my clientele. Over the years, I came to the realization that cases of alopecia were rising amongst the males and females of my community. I planned on helping those people, and the first step to helping them was getting my certification as a hair loss practitioner. Now I specialize in braiding and hair care services for alopecia/hair loss clients. I provide them with tips, styles, and products to enhance their hair health and beauty.
In 2012, my own home-buying process ignited my aspiration to become a real estate agent. The excitement and motivation I felt while purchasing a home for my family inspired me to embark on a career in real estate. In 2022 I went to real estate school and obtained my licensure. My primary goal is to achieve the best possible outcomes for my clients by attentively listening to their needs and desires, fostering strong relationships, and maintaining open and honest communication. My expertise in the industry has cultivated a genuine love for real estate, instilling confidence in my clients as they navigate their real estate transactions.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My audience was built on social media through reels, pics, and statuses I’ve posted. Almost everything I post is about hair and now real estate. I post about it so much that when people see me they say “You’re that girl who does hair loss braids and just became a real estate agent!” I get that a lot from people and i love it. Even though you may not get as much “likes” as you want, please believe that people see you. You must post knowing that your ultimate audience are those who need your service and/or products. NEVER STOP POSTING!
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Braiding was a hobby for me as a young child. Once I became a young mother in 12th grade I braided as a hustle to provide for my child/children throughout my college years. Once i graduated as an occupational therapy assistant, I worked and did not braid much for about 5-6 years. My work salary was not enough for me to take care of my 4 kids at the time. I had to go back to what i knew…….Braiding! Once I started working in the schools as an occupational therapy assistant it gave me more time to focus on my “side hustle”! I started back braiding at home in my kitchen. My goal was always to have my own salon but I was complacent braiding at home. Throughout the years my clientele built by word of mouth and social media. During COVID a friend of mine reached out to me to ask if I wanted a space in her shop. I accepted her offer and gave myself 6 months to move out her space and find a shop. 3 months later I found my shop! It was everything I wanted! Everything happened so smoothly and I knew it wasn’t anyone but God who made it possible.
Key points to realize is that I built up my clientele first by braiding hair at home. By time I ventured out to do hair outside of my home, I already had the customers to make sure I would’ve been able to handle business expenses. I made sure to get a location that I could afford rather it was me alone or me with others. I made sure to have great customer service even when braiding at home. I treat all my clients the same and I’m very knowledgeable in what I do. Im always researching, taking classes, etc., to learn all that I can about the businesses I have. Please understand that theres always room for growth in everything you do! These are some of the ways you turn customers into clients!
