We recently connected with Jackson Greene and have shared our conversation below.
Jackson, appreciate you joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
The story began during my freshman year at MTSU when I was working for DoorDash. With a longstanding interest in technology and a desire for a career in media, I was actively seeking opportunities. Having previously worked for a custom home builder in high school in Maryville, I had a connection there. They needed someone to develop a new website and enhance their social media presence, so I volunteered. I accepted the position as their Director of Digital Marketing during winter break of my freshman year. After completing their website, one of the owners approached me, suggesting that I could offer similar services to other companies. Until then, entrepreneurship hadn’t crossed my mind; I was solely focused on media. However, his words resonated with me, prompting me to research starting a business, including obtaining an LLC. By January 1st, I had officially established my LLC. My mindset was simple: if I could acquire one or two clients, it would cover the initial startup costs. Even if it didn’t progress beyond that, it would still be a valuable learning experience. However, we were blessed as clients continued to come our way. Over the last few years, we’ve been grateful for the opportunity to steadily expand.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We work with everyone from non-profits to multi-million dollar businesses helping them achieve different facets of their marketing. Our objective is to provide excellent service while building relationships. People always come before profits, and we structure everything we do in a way that benefits all parties involved. To do this, we create and tailor customized packages and plans for each client to ensure they are getting the best for their unique needs.
The vast majority of our clients work with us on multiple different projects, as we pride ourselves on being a one-stop shop and building client relationships. Relationships are the foundation of everything we stand for at Pursuit Digital, meaning that our focus will always be on supporting the people we have the pleasure of working with. We like to say that “OUR mission is YOUR mission.”
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I’ve always had a fascination with technology and media, which led to me taking a position as the director of media ministries at my home church before leaving for college. Through that position, I was blessed to receive an enormous amount of real-world experience in both technology and leadership, which solidified my desire to continue working in media moving forward.
During my first semester at MTSU, I took a job with a Maryville-based luxury home builder as their director of marketing. After working for just a few short months, they encouraged me to begin my own agency and take them on as my first client. Initially, entrepreneurship had never piqued my interest. However, with their guidance and encouragement, I made the decision to launch my own digital marketing firm halfway through my freshman year of college.
My first big opportunity came when the board of directors at Maryville City Schools Foundation approached me about producing their virtual fundraising event, the 2021 Starlight Gala. I was grateful for the opportunity but knew how big of an undertaking it would be. Their annual gala was responsible for raising the vast majority of the foundation’s donations for the year- and this was their first time going virtual due to Covid restrictions. After working tirelessly with their team, I am pleased to say that we produced a wildly successful evening- raising nearly $200,000 on the night for the children in Maryville City. Our team was asked to return the following three years (and we are already prepping for next year!) Since then, we have raised over 700K alongside MCSF. Because of the success of the 2021 virtual gala, I was able to scale our operations, hiring our video crew for the first time that summer and bringing on our first employee that fall.
Throughout the next two years, I continued to grow the agency while still earning my degree at MTSU. During those two years, we worked with dozens of businesses, ministries, and non-profit organizations to help them pursue their goals. Relationships are the foundation of everything we stand for at Pursuit Digital, meaning that we will always focus on supporting the people we have the pleasure of working with. We like to say that “OUR mission is YOUR mission.”
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
It’s really all about customer and client satisfaction for us. When you care about your clients, they care about you enough to share it with others. A big chunk of our clients comes from referrals, and that is how we like it! We run a marketing agency, but we know the best marketing is a happy customer.
