We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jackson Floyd. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jackson below.
Jackson, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve always known I’ve wanted to pursue a creative career. Ever since I was a child, I have absolutely loved art but it was 3 or 4 years ago that I started to realize that I feel like I need to pursue a creative career. I remember creating a painting and looking at it afterwards and thinking to myself “I really enjoy doing this and could never see myself getting tired of it.” This has translated into all facets of art such as photo editing, music, etc.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I edit photos of cars for my followers on Instagram, but my favorite outlet is creating paintings but those aren’t usually publicized like my photos are. I got into this hobby just purely from my love for all things art! I would be more than happy to create a painting or edit photos for people but as of right now, I have no “professional” way to accept commissions so the best way to contact me would be by email ([email protected]) or by direct messaging me on Instagram (@jacflo.pics) I believe the main things that set me apart from others is my style. My editing style and painting style are unique to me and nobody could do the exact same as I do. I am without a doubt most proud of my paintings. Every one I have created has came from a place of raw emotion and I feel like every one of them is a piece of me. I would love for my paintings to get more attention but I am not completely confident with my advertising abilities to get them out there.
Have you ever had to pivot?
My biggest pivot was the content I made on Instagram. Initially my account was based around photoshopping actor Willem Dafoe onto popular album covers. I chose this because I saw other similar accounts were getting plenty of traction and I wanted to build an audience but it started to get stale after a while so I switched to the edited car photos and I lost a large chunk of my followers due to the switch in content, but it’s so much easier to do when you’re making content you’re actually proud of.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I don’t think a lot of non-creatives understand how much of our emotion we as creatives put into our work. Creating art is a form of therapy for me so my work is a direct physical representation of how I am feeling at the time of creating it. I would say that if you ever look at a painting and think to yourself “This is creepy” or “This is gross” or really just any negative thoughts on the painting, try and remember that the artist is probably proud of that painting and doesn’t feel any negative emotion towards it.
