Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jackie Van Sant Downes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Jackie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Along with taking care of clients, taking care of our team is one of the most important things we can do as leaders. Looking back on your journey, did you have a boss that was really great? Maybe you can tell us about that boss and what made them a wonderful person to work for?
The best boss I ever had was my winemaker at Comstock Winery, Chris Russi. He was not just a leader but a mentor who had an incredible way of seeing challenges from different perspectives. I would often get worked up or stressed when issues arose in the winemaking process—it’s such an intricate and sometimes unpredictable job. Chris always remained calm and had this incredible ability to help me step back, breathe, and approach problems with more patience and intention. His positive attitude was contagious, and he taught me how to stay focused on solutions rather than getting bogged down by obstacles.
Beyond his leadership in winemaking, Chris was just an all-around amazing human being. He genuinely cared about the team and fostered an environment of support and collaboration. The team we had at the winery was the best I’ve ever worked with— shout our to Saul too! We each instinctively knew what the others needed, both in terms of professional support and personal encouragement. We all worked really hard, but it never felt like work because of the positive, cohesive atmosphere Chris helped create. His leadership made a lasting impact on me, not only in how I approach my current work but also in how I strive to lead and support others.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Jackie van Sant-Downes, founder and winemaker of Jaclynn Renée Wines and head winemaker at Driftwood Estate Winery. My journey into the wine industry began after I graduated from Texas Tech University in 2007. Though originally from Texas, I found my path in Sonoma County, California, where I immersed myself in the world of winemaking, learning from some of the best in the industry. It was in Sonoma that I honed my skills and deepened my passion for creating exceptional wines.
In 2013, I took a leap and launched Jaclynn Renée Wines, a brand that combines my love for the craft and my vision for bringing something unique to the market. Today, I’m proud to continue producing wines that showcase the beauty of both California and Texas, where I am currently based. The wines I create are all about balance—expressing the terroir of the vineyards while keeping the elegance and character that wine lovers appreciate.
At the heart of my winemaking philosophy is a focus on quality and a deep respect for the land and the family vineyards we source from. I work with premier vineyards in both Texas and Sonoma, crafting wines that reflect the unique characteristics of each region. Whether it’s a vibrant, fruit-forward wine from Texas or a refined, nuanced bottle from Sonoma, I strive to create wines that tell a story and elevate the experience of those who enjoy them.
What sets me apart from others in the industry is the blend of experience I bring from both coasts and my deep understanding of different winemaking climates. My work bridges the gap between the diversity of Texas and the tradition of Sonoma, and I believe that each wine I produce carries a sense of place and craftsmanship that is hard to find elsewhere.
I’m most proud of the wines I’ve been able to create through Jaclynn Renée Wines and the relationships I’ve built over the years with both clients and colleagues in the industry. I’ve poured my heart and soul into every bottle, and the satisfaction of knowing my wines are enjoyed by so many is incredibly rewarding.
For potential clients, followers, or fans, I want them to know that my work is rooted in authenticity and passion. Every wine I make is the product of years of learning, dedication, and a deep love for the craft. When you enjoy one of my wines, you’re experiencing a piece of my journey, my vision, and my commitment to making wines that stand the test of time.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the biggest pivots I’ve faced in my career happened in 2025, and it’s one that truly reshapes the direction of Jaclynn Renée Wines. After spending 15 years making wine in California, working with some of the finest Sonoma County fruit, I found myself at a critical crossroads. With the big move back to Texas and the challenges of increasing production costs in California, I was struggling to maintain the balance between making quality wine and keeping up with the demands of the business. At the same time, I wanted to be closer to my wines—closer to the vines and the land that would allow me to be more hands-on from start to finish.
The stress of trying to keep up with California’s escalating costs and my overwhelming responsibilities took a toll on my health. I was facing burnout and, honestly, at one point, I thought I might have to throw in the towel. The pressure was intense, and I was feeling disconnected from my initial passion for winemaking. But in the midst of that uncertainty, an incredible opportunity presented itself: I was given the chance to purchase some truly exceptional Texas fruit. It was a turning point, one that made me realize I could pivot in a way that honored both my professional expertise and my personal connection to my roots.
After much reflection, I made the decision to shift gears and move Jaclynn Renée Wines from 100% Sonoma County fruit to 100% Texas fruit. This felt like a return to my homestate, a return to my roots, and it felt right. I’m now able to get boots on the ground here in Texas and be involved in every step of the process, from vine to bottle, something I couldn’t do while operating across the country. The energy of working with local vineyards and being close to the land is revitalizing, and it’s honestly been a game-changer for both my mental health and my craft.
It’s an exciting transition, but it’s also bittersweet. I spent over a decade and a half in California crafting wines and building relationships that I’ll always cherish. The knowledge and experience I gained in Sonoma will always be part of me and will continue to influence the wines I make, no matter where I am. But this shift to Texas feels like the next chapter—one where I can truly honor my roots, work closely with the land, and make wines that reflect the unique terroir of this amazing state.
As we move forward, I am incredibly excited about making Texas wine and the journey ahead. It’s a new beginning, but it’s also deeply rooted in the tradition and passion that has guided me for the last 18 years in the wine industry. The change is one that will allow me to stay true to my craft while embracing the opportunities of the future. And, above all, it’s a reminder that even in the face of challenges, there’s always room to pivot, grow, and create something even more exciting and meaningful.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My reputation in the industry has been built on hard work, staying true to my vision, and fostering strong relationships. From the beginning, I’ve focused on producing high-quality wines that reflect my commitment to the craft and my roots. The genuine partnerships I’ve developed with growers, winery partners, our distributor, and our loyal wine club members have been key to our success. I’m incredibly grateful for their trust and support, which has been crucial to building a reputation of authenticity and connection in the industry.
