We recently connected with Jackie Meyer and have shared our conversation below.
Jackie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
When I was 14, my parents signed me up to be a vendor for a local farmers market without asking me. I was super scared and upset at first, because I had never sold any of my crafts before. For the first 2 years I did the market, my mom came with me and helped me set up and become more comfortable selling. They had supported me from the very beginning, and pushed me to do things that I was uncomfortable with
Jackie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started crafting when I was 10, and have learned many different crafts! I currently sell home decor and accessories, such as jewelry, trinket dishes, decor, and crochet items such as plushies and bags! Now, at 18, I have my own Etsy shop, and go to many different craft shows, markets, and anywhere I can to put my products out there! I am so proud of how far I’ve come, and how comfortable I now am selling my products to people!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love to see how happy people are when they have my products! Seeing others enjoying what I create as much as I love to create it is easily the best part! I especially love when people who I see often come to ask what I have new! it makes me so happy to know that they get excited to see what my new stuff is!
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
People who don’t create handmade items sometimes struggle to understand pricing. Handmaking an item takes time, and a lot of it. It also takes resources that we have to make our money back on. I’ve been told that my items have been both priced too high and too low, but I know why my prices are what they are. I am as fair to everyone (myself and people who buy my products) as I can be. I can’t sell myself short, and I won’t charge too much
