We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jackie Martinez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jackie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today
If I were to start over again I would definitely invest more in training. A lot of skills that I know now is from trial and error but I do feel like proper training would of made me faster. Also what’s so important is being consistent. I started going solo in 2019 which only lasted 6 months because I had another job in corporate America so it was hard to juggle both and I just quit the beauty industry and then came back in 2022 to becoming full time as an esthetician and have been consistent ever since.

Jackie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, for those of you who don’t know me, my name is Jackie and I’m a mom of two beautiful kid, raised in Las Vegas and first generation Mexican-American. I started my cosmetology career in 2014. I’ve always just loved the beauty industry and initially I wanted to be a hair stylist and quickly realized that esthetics was where my heart was at. I didn’t really know where this career was going to take me until I decided to open up my business as a solo esthetician in a private studio in salon suites in Henderson, Nv. The services I offer are lash extensions, lash lifts, brow lamination, brow tinting, and full body waxing. I believe what sets me apart is my personality and my genuine care to make every client look their best. I really want all my current and future clients to know that I have their best interest at heart. Clients become more like family to me so it’s not just a service they get it’s a whole experience. I’m always asking for feedback and if my clients are not completely satisfied I’m always offering to come back so I can make it better.

Have you ever had to pivot?
When I started my own business I was working full time as a medical assistant in 2019. I was only renting out a small suite at a Salon on the weekends because I had my full time job but I really wanted to branch off on my own. I wanted to to build my clientele to be able to leave my full time job and just focus on my business. I got pregnant with my second child and was working 6-7 days a week to make my dreams a reality. I was about 6 months pregnant when I just felt drained and exhausted working so much and being pregnant that I made the decision to quit my business. It was a decision that shifted everything. I felt stuck in my career because the beauty industry was my passion but I chose comfortability and medical insurance for my family. I ended up having my baby in 2020 (Covid times) and things were so uncertain at that time. I was so unhappy in my career that It wasn’t until late 2022 that I decided to leave all my fears and leave my full time job and pursue my business.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Social media has been the best source of new clients for me. Ive had many clients tell me that they liked my personality on TikTok/Instagram or just loved my work and were looking for a new lash artist. I don’t use Facebook as much but I do follow many community groups on there and post my business and get clients from their as well.
