We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jackie Macias a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jackie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
If I could go back in time I think I would have started earlier, but I also believe that everything this far in life has happened when it’s supposed to. I have always had a deep passion for art and photography. If I would have been more confident in myself and started earlier, I could have enjoyed my hobby for longer. At this moment I get to enjoy photography with my husband and we run the business together so I couldn’t ask for it any other way. The business was always designed to be a side job in addition to my career in order to have an outlet that gives me joy and is also at my own pace.

Jackie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have a passion for all things art including painting, crafting and mostly photography. I started my business with my husband in order to practice my love for photography and hopefully make a little money on the side. The primary goals have always been to do something fun and new, create art for strangers and enjoy the process. The services offered are photography sessions ranging from engagement photos, family photos, professional headshots and anything in between. My husband focuses primarily on videography and offers reel style videos of the sessions, or specific directed video. My business doesn’t necessarily solve problems for my clients. It does (hopefully) provide them with a space to be themselves and have memories encapsulated in photos forever.
Something that sets me apart from others in the industry is that I have a unique style and I am my own person who works with my clients to take photos of them, letting their vibes and personality guide the photos session rather than making a cookie cutter scripted session.
I am most proud of myself in taking the leap and creating the business. I drew heavy inspiration from a photographer my husband and I hired on a trip. She is a wonderfully amazing human who made both my husband and I feel like we had known her for years. That was what I wanted if I was going to start a business if my own.
I want my future clients to know that with the dynamic duo of my husband and I, they will have the most memorable photo session of their lives.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing clientele was offering free sessions within the first month of the conception of the business. It gave us the opportunity to line up a handful of clients and gave us a feel for how to manage a schedule and return finished product in a timely manner.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media can be a hard one, but the easiest advice I can give is to be yourself. There shouldn’t be a reason to put on a mask for your clientele. Being honest, and open worked the best for our social media success. Posting regularly of completed sessions gets my work out into the public eye and then into a cycle of new clientele.
