We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jackie Han. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jackie below.
Jackie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the most important things small businesses can do, in our view, is to serve underserved communities that are ignored by giant corporations who often are just creating mass-market, one-size-fits-all solutions. Talk to us about how you serve an underserved community.
Through photography and art, I bridge this gap and share a visible presence of LGBTQ+ artists, specifically folks who are trans, nonbinary, gender-expansive and BIPOC. Working closely with emerging queer artists who have never had professional headshots before, I provide free or discounted services to make headshots more accessible. I also have presented educational workshops to support and elevate artists and set them up for success. As co-chair to Art of Pride, San Diego’s LGBTQIA+ collaborative of artists and art lovers, I lead a group that engages with artists by giving them platform and visibility through support and education.
Jackie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a queer photographer & visual artist who is compassionate about storytelling through photography and art. As I find my own style of photography, I am becoming more focused on the potentiality of BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ professionals, performers and artists, helping them thrive by sharing their true authentic selves with the world. The more I engage with my community, the more I learn about the deep rooted culture that thrives around me. I also have witnessed the lack of opportunities for folks who are very talented and creative but their voices are drowned out. My vision is to have a portfolio that has purpose, creating images of folks that give them the confidence to be heard and seen.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
My professional photography career has been very successful, focusing on portraits and events. I simply love capturing people and people in their element. Recently, I expanded to real estate & architectural photography and partnered with my wife in this new venture: GOOD ROOM Photography. www.goodroom.co – Although I still work on my portraiture imagery, I have pivoted to a more steady source of income catering to real estate, property managers and architects.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I have utilized my background in customer service management to build clients over the years. My attention to the details and the needs of my clients have always paved positive outcomes and quality referrals. I haven’t paid for any ads in my photography career. Everything has been through recommendations.
