We were lucky to catch up with Jack Ambriz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jack , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The Unicorn Hunters Club was founded after identifying a need in the e-commerce industry. As passionate cigar enthusiasts, my partner and I noticed that despite growing customer lists, many had the same question: “Where do I start with cigars?” Seeing this recurring question led us to realize that there was an opportunity to offer value to both newcomers and aficionados.
When we first started smoking cigars, we recognized that buying quality cigars was expensive and carried risk. To address this, we wanted to create a way to reduce the risk for newcomers and provide value to both them and seasoned cigar smokers. The result was the Unicorn Hunters Club, a monthly subscription that allows new cigar smokers to explore the world of premium cigars while also providing aficionados with a surprise element by including rare and hard-to-find Unicorn cigars once per quarter. This unique approach has allowed us to stand out from competitors and best of all create a wonderful community of members.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a fairly young man, only 30, and my passion has always been for luxury, not for its status, but for the experience it offers. Throughout my career, I have explored various industries, but they have all been centered around luxury. My experiences have ranged from designing and manufacturing aftermarket parts for exotic and hypercard (one of my favorite projects was creating an exhaust for a Pagani Huayra) to learning photography and shooting campaigns and events for renowned brands like Lamborghini and Louis XIII, to working with tech-startups to make the wine industry more accessible, and now, with Unicorn Hunters Club.
These endeavors, or “adventures” as I like to call them, have allowed me to gain a firm understanding of the kind of experience I want to create for my clients, and have given me a great vision to where we want to take the brand moving forward.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I often stress that we are in the customer service industry, rather than just a subscription club. This is particularly true because we deal with tobacco, which restricts our advertising methods. We can’t just allocate a budget for social media campaigns and target potential customers in the same way other businesses do. Instead, we prioritize taking care of our members.
From the moment an order is placed, to the shipping process, we ensure excellent quality control and never shy away from speaking with our members to understand their preferences and requests. I firmly believe that word of mouth is the most effective form of marketing, and the better we treat our customers, the more likely they are to recommend us. We have invested considerable effort in devising ways to make each member feel special, and we always deliver on our promises. If any issues arise, we go above and beyond to fix them.
We also value loyalty, which is why we offer personalized discounts that members can redeem with loyalty points they earn through purchasing from us. This approach doesn’t devalue our brand or any of the brands we work with; instead, it incentivizes customers to return because they know they will be well taken care of. As a result, our customer lifetime value (LTV) is high.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Our primary strategy for expanding our customer base has been word of mouth. As they say, all you need are 1000 true fans, and that’s where we focus our efforts. Additionally, publishing articles like this one helps us spread our mission statement and reach new audiences.
We also prioritize over-delivering for our customers. We believe that investing in quality and going above and beyond is more worthwhile than cutting corners and generating a lot of one-time customers. This approach has allowed us to maintain consistency and deliver great customer service, which, in turn, has been the most effective strategy for us.
