We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jacinta Martin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jacinta, appreciate you joining us today. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new firm – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
I unexpectedly received my first client, and here is how.
I traveled one day to my broker’s office to do some real estate work as a woman walked in and sat near me. She opened her laptop to begin working, and I noticed she began to look around for help.
She asked me questions, and I mentioned I was new but was willing to help her where I could. She said thank you, and we ended up getting what she needed to continue her work.
Little did I know that later she reached out and asked me if I wanted to help her sell a home not far from our office. She mentioned that she has been in real estate for years, and our new technology systems were a lot to learn.
So, I took her up on her offer to assist with the technology portion. Being a new agent at that time, I also wanted to be able to learn more about the contracts, and with her, I was able to do just that.
We went to closing in December 2019, and the rest is history.
Jacinta, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Sure, I’d like to introduce myself.
I am the author of the novel The Fragmented Soul and From Faith 2 Faith: A 45 Days Devotional.
I am the creator of a blog called FRUITFUL JEMS, where my contributors and I teach people nine ways to rebuild their identity through love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control.
Also, I am a real estate agent in Georgia and a mom of two children.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I am a writer and entrepreneur who loves to read. So, I look for books that help challenge me to grow.
Two of my favorite books are Boundaries by Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend and Rocket Fuel by Gino Wickman and Mark C Winters.
These two books are so helpful when it comes to operating my business. Knowing how to properly set boundaries with your work, contractors, employees, family, and friends is critical to growth and expansion.
The other book, Rocket Fuel, helps companies to structure their organizations internally. It is essential to learn what your business foundation needs to be so you can start building a team.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
First, I will give you the lesson I had to unlearn.
“I can do it by myself.”
Now, here is the backstory.
I was preparing to take my exam with the state to gain my real estate license. The instructors told us the state exam would consist of four hours, where the clock does not stop if you have to get up for any reason.
I was worried that I would be unable to stay focused to get through every question. So, the strategy I implemented was to go to the library and study all the questions for four hours each day for five days.
Just like a person who exercises has to train their way to improve their health or produce muscle, this study method allowed me to see what four hours of exam time felt like to my body, mind, and overall focus when going through the testing.
As a mom, my first concern was who could help watch my children while I went to the library. But then, I realized that when you are doing something to better yourself, you have to ask for help.
Getting my real estate license required that I did not make this journey alone, and I am grateful for all who helped me along the way!
