We recently connected with Jacely La Santa and have shared our conversation below.
Jacely, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Honestly I think about this pretty often, mostly in times of reflection or when I’m frustrated with my life. Being an artist is amazing, being able to express your feelings or tell your story in any creative form is amazing because it’s not something that everyone can do, let alone execute well enough to do it as a profession. But it is a challenging path for those that want to make a living off of it. You’re gonna get so many people rejecting you before you finally run into someone that has the power to change your life who isn’t self serving. Most of the people you start with won’t be the people you reach the finish line with. And relationships become challenging because with more success means more time apart & sometimes for long periods of time. It’s challenging on an emotional/mental level just as much as it is on a financial level. Most people think the life of an artist is easy or not even a real job because it “looks fun”. But even though it’s one of the most challenging things I’ve ever had to do, I can’t see myself doing anything else. Creating music has saved me so many times & continues to save me
Jacely, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
my artist name is Jade Omari. I’m a 29 year old lgbtq Hispanic singer/songwriter/poet from Hyattsville, Maryland. My father is Puerto Rican & my mother is half Dominican and half Cuban. Creativity runs on both sides of my family which is why I can sing, dance, rap, draw/paint, write songs & poetry, produce & play instruments like the piano & guitar by ear. My creative journey began in elementary school when I was in 5th grade. I was in a program called “Colours & Chorus” that involved singing and dancing & competing. As I got older I started experimenting with songwriting by applying my poetry to instrumentals that I found on YouTube & began my journey as a singer/songwriter. I’ve been doing music for about 12 years now & it has been a beautifully wild journey. In 2021 I signed to an A-list producer while going through a major heartbreak which helped unlock a level in my creativity that I hadn’t quite tapped into before, and allowed me to create some of the most beautiful music I’ve ever created. Everyone is unique on this earth, no person is greater than another. So my confidence in my craft comes from what I think sets me apart & makes me stand out, which is my ability to articulate whatever I go through & turn it into a universal melodic frequency that is able to touch anyone who hears it that has ever gone through something. I never lie in my writing, Everything I do is from the heart and personal experiences which is why I think it’s relatable for so many people. Not everyone can relate to being rich & partying, but everyone can relate to love. Everyone can relate to pain. Everyone, on some level or another, can relate to needing something healed & I think my music is able to do that for some people
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
“Conversations With God” the trilogy. I read all 3 book ( as well as the 4th one that came out). This book was like a hug to my spirit. It helped alleviate a lot of stress that was rooted in overthinking or feelings of despair. I feel like these 3 books would honestly help the world if everyone took the time to read it
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goal is to break the social norms that have been created when it comes to music. The goal is to awaken people to their highest frequency so that we can make a difference where it matters most. To put the focus back on artists that have God given talents instead of only giving opportunities to artists who are popular. I want to leave a mark forever. I truly want to make a difference that actually means something
