We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful J Terrell Jeter. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with J Terrell below.
J Terrell , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I believe in taking risks now. Before the pandemic, I was playing it safe. I was in Louisiana to stay close to family. They were my “safety” blanket. The job I had at that time was mediocre, but I knew my full potential wasn’t being tapped. So I interviewed for a job on December 18th in Dallas. I received news on December 19th that I was being hired and on December 20th, I packed up one suitcase and instantly moved. I didn’t second guess or listen to all the “what-ifs” in my head. I just jumped and it was one of the best decisions that I have made.

J Terrell , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
What’s up, everyone! It’s your boy, J Terrell Jeter. I am a publisher print and runway model, an educator, a coach, and a photographer/videographer. I wear multiple hats.
I started modeling at around 18 years old. I was doing local fashion shows around the city. I continued through college, I was also a D1 Track and Field athlete so I did some brand work or local runway shows again. But after relocating to Texas, I began to push myself as a brand and as a person and that’s when things started to pick up for me.
I believe what sets me apart is my creativity. I always tell everyone. When I do any brand work or shoots (that I have creative control over or have any influence in) I always push the standard. I am always challenging myself and the people around me. That’s honestly what I live about my team and the people I have in my corner. We are always trying to go bigger on every project we do. I am very big on discipline now on you can’t help everyone and everyone doesn’t deserve a seat at your table. For so long, I was presented with opportunities where I was instantly try to put everyone else on those opportunities. It wasn’t until recently that I realized I have to look out for me and make sure that I’m taken care of first.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I believe it’s honestly the amount of people that you get the engage with or that see you. The world is a huge place, and recently I had to sit back and realize a lot of the people I have been watching on TV or listening to their music. I have had the opportunity to sit in the same room with these people and have conversations about working together with these people and their management. For me, it’s the little things. I may hop on someone’s Instagram live and they are speaking to me and shouting me out and I’ve never met this person! To me, it’s truly rewarding and an honor.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
It only takes one share. Everyone says they support their friends and family but all it truly takes is one like and one share! Everyone is so caught up in the mess that goes on within the media…Everyone is quick to send a video of someone fighting or Chrisean and Blueface, but you won’t share a local business or if your friend is starting a clothing line. These are the support systems that creatives need to keep going. You will be surprised what one share or follow will do.
