My journey was far from smooth. I began my business with no prior knowledge of the industry, which made the initial phase particularly challenging. Establishing the business required significant effort, including navigating paperwork, insurance, and other administrative tasks. Financial constraints limited my ability to invest in labels, packaging, Amazon listings, and advertising, and I lacked the resources to produce high-quality photographs.
The business demanded that I wear many hats, requiring me to learn about Amazon operations, advertising, and photography. It wasn’t until a year in that I was able to professionalize my approach. During this time, I began to build a network and connect with clients and fans who appreciated my products so much that they created user-generated content to support my brand.
While the early stages were difficult, requiring me to handle everything from manufacturing to labeling, marketing, and photography on my own, the experience was invaluable. I faced considerable criticism, which I used constructively to refine my formulas and enhance my professionalism.
Today, although I run a small business, I am proud to have a loyal customer base who value and benefit from my skincare products. While I continue to grow and evolve, I am already satisfied with the progress I have made.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
Selling on Amazon has been both a rewarding and challenging journey for me. While it offers a massive platform to reach potential customers, the road has not been easy. One of the biggest hurdles I’ve faced is the high cost of PPC (pay-per-click) advertising. It’s incredibly expensive, and as a small business, it often feels like you’re fighting an uphill battle. Unlike big brands, there are no special privileges or assistance for small sellers, which makes it even tougher to get noticed in such a competitive market.
To succeed, I had to dive deep into learning SEO to optimize my listings and ensure that customers could find my products. I spent countless hours creating beautiful, high-quality content and photos to make my listings stand out. It was a process of trial and error, but slowly I learned how to make my products more appealing and searchable.
Collecting reviews was another challenge. It’s crucial to build trust with potential customers, but that requires patience, effort, and consistency. With every satisfied customer, I worked hard to gather feedback and reviews to establish credibility. Despite these obstacles, I’m proud of how far I’ve come, but the journey continues with constant learning and adaptation.
However, even with all the progress I’ve made, selling on Amazon is still incredibly hard. The competition is fierce, and the costs remain high, which is why I’ve shifted my focus toward social media, particularly Instagram. Through platforms like Instagram, I can connect more directly with my audience, present my brand in a more personal and creative way, and engage with customers on a deeper level. Instagram allows me to showcase my products’ uniqueness, build relationships, and grow my business in a space that feels more suited to my brand’s identity. It’s become a better platform for me to grow and share my products, and that’s where my focus is now.
