We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful J Mike. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with J below.
J, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
If I had the option I would have started my business sooner. I started my clothing brand business Jon Jamar officially in 2020 during the pandemic, I worked for a government based insurance company at the time of the start. I just started to feel that it was more for me and I wanted to go in the direction I love which is fashion. The reason why I never started soon was because of fear. i was afraid to fail, I was afraid to take that responsibility of being a leader. If I was to start sooner I would have experience things sooner and learned things early on, but I do not dwell on the past. I am happy where I’ am and I am falling in love with the journey.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello,
My name is Jmike, I am the owner of Jon Jamar which is a clothing brand that offers Women and Men clothing. As a kid I always wanted to look my best and different from everyone else. I started off distressing and painting dad hats that people were drawn to it gave me enough courage to start my own clothing brand. We have been in news articles , digital magazines, we have also been apart of Michigan Fashion Week and just happy that we are continuing to growing.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
As a business owner I had to learn that it is okay to fail, growing up as kid in school and even growing up with your parents we were always taught that failing is bad thing and to never never fail. And I feel that plays in our subconscious mind and putting that fear is because a lot of us are afraid to fail rather we admitting or not. But in business and life you are going to fail, you are going to be rejected , your going to be told no , and sometimes your plan is not going to work. And thats okay failing builds character , knowledge , and wisdoms. You learn from what did not work and trying figure it out.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
I have a website and the platform the Ecommerce that I use is Wix . I like the features that Wix offer, but I am also on Etsy, eBay, and I am looking into Amazon store but still gathering information .
