We caught up with the brilliant and insightful J. Gentile a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
J., thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
My need to create is a constant for me and is not a choice. It’s apart of my existence. Without it I feel a cathartic constipation within me. However as of this past year I have been guided to pursue something higher than myself and my art. I have been lead to serve the community as a death worker. I will be taking on the role of a Funeral Director and grief counselor. I have had a near death experience as a teenager so I can really empathize with the spiritual process during death. I have also gone through a close call with my child in which was given 3 years to live. I can connect with that grief of letting go with others and especially with parents with that loss. Fortunately after a lot of genetic testing his diagnosis was found to be incorrect. Regardless those processes I felt in real time. I basically know what it feels to stop breathing in my body and my spirit. I plan to use these experiences to serve and give care to the deceased and the living. I plan on specializing in the care of deceased children. Along with the care and ability to hold space for families who are grieving the loss of their child. I will continue my art career but will just further my personal development and offerings to humanity on a more whole level

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a visionary artist and painter who focuses on the abstraction of spiritual concepts and interpretates them with paint. My style I would say is abstract with a touch of surrealism. I am pretty adventurous with my art and do not limit my creativity. So I am always creating something new. For the past 10 years I have been working on an electromagnetic painting. Basically a painting that creates itself based on its reactions to each element, color and arrangement of electrons and protons. I also design and create special talismans along with jewelry that aids in spiritual healing and spiritual connections.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I would say the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the possibility of connecting with others on a deeper level. Art can really pull you in and never let you out. Changing your perspectives and making you question yourself. With my art I try to reach past all of these surface barriers and inspire a deeper connection.
