We caught up with the brilliant and insightful J.G. LaFleur a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, J.G. thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I was exposed to music at an early age; it became my first love. I am a pastor’s kid. We are always put on the spot to sing, speak and play our instrument. Practicing with my uncle, attending rehearsals and piano lessons were always the highlight of my day. Growing up my uncle took me to concerts. He called them “musicals”. I can still remember the first time I went to a Fred Hammond concert. Those concerts inspired me creatively. I adored the big band sound, and knew I wanted my own sound that incorporated those techniques. I didn’t know how they did it, but I was determined. Most didn’t understand my aspirations; that can be disheartening over time. I am forever grateful that my uncle continuously encouraged me to “keep going man, don’t stop. Learn twenty four more songs”. As I laughed, he reaffirmed.
Years passed and life happened. I went to college and started a sensible career in history and pharmacy. One day, I got an opportunity to attend a studio session for the first time. The pieces of the puzzle finally began to come together. It was exhilarating to watch the artists, producer and audio engineer in action. That day changed the trajectory of my life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a vocalist, songwriter, producer, audio engineer, composer, historian and social media manager. Early exposure to music and the arts inspired me to obtain a degree in Audio Recording Technology. I own and operate Melody on Earth Media and Melody on Earth Records; which provides audio recording, music production, music composition and social media services. As a vocalist, I perform, feature on original songs and provide background vocals and arrangements. My passion for music is shown through my work. I aim to give my clients the best. It’s always a pleasure to assist other creatives through their unique process. J.G. LaFleur is not just another local sound engineer and vocalist. My experiences in life, both professional and personal, have molded me into the woman I am today. I am excited to share the gifts that God has given me.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to uplift others through music and education. Melodies, lyrics and words can change one’s outlook. Our eyes and ears are entry points to our souls. What we put in, whether good or bad, always resurfaces. I aim to be a source of positive energy to others.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The most important book that everyone should read is the Bible. Even those who don’t consider themselves a believer should read it at least once. The Bible is packed with wisdom that will prove useful in every aspect of life.
Robert Greene has a series of books that will impact every reader.
