We caught up with the brilliant and insightful J-Darius a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
J-Darius, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project that I’ve worked on is my latest album, “No Time Wasted”. This album came out on August 5, 2022. This was my second album and I really wanted to show my growth and abilities as a singer-songwriter. On this album, I wrote all the lyrics, sung vocal every part, including the all background vocals. I wanted to display the range of my vocal ability and share concepts that were meaningful. Mostly importantly, I wanted to share how everything happens in its own time and you have to be grateful for your past experiences because it has molded you into the person you are today.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am an R&B/soul artist from San Antonio, Texas. I have been performing under the artist name, J-Darius since 2020. My music was birthed out of the pandemic and my desire to create original music. I’ve always had a love for music and grew up singing in choirs and gospel groups, but I felt it was important to start expressing myself through my own artistry.
I am most proud of the consistency that I have shown over the past three years to create original continent. I have released 2 full length studio albums, 3 EPs, one of which is a Holiday EP.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In January of 2021, I was involved in a horrific car wreck. A drunk driver rear ended me on the highway as I was returning from a studio session. My first concert as a solo artist was set for April 2021, so this was really shocking. Having to deal with the physical pain, recovery, and battle thoughts of whether or not to pursue music.
Yet and still I held on to my goal of performing my first solo concert which turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. A sold out show, in the middle of the pandemic, from a relatively brand new artist, but I did it! It was a time that I pushed through and reached a major milestone in my music career.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is when listeners are able to quote back lyrics to you. This shows how connected they are to the music and how they identify with the lyrics in the songs. It is very special for a songwriter to hear someone quote lyrics or sing along to their songs. It means that we’ve made a connection deeper than just music. The art comes from our head, our heart, our soul. So when someone latches on to it, it’s very special.
