Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Izzy Smut. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Izzy, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I was 16 years old, I watched a Joan Jett music video on TV and it changed my life. I didn’t know women can rock out and be taken seriously and it blew my mind. I took guitar lessons and been playing ever since. instantly wanted to start a band and loved music since then.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My podcast Never Mind The Broadcast Here’s Izzy Smut was something I wanted to do for a long time. I wanted to give the local bands time to shine. I’m sick of mainstream music. There’s zero thought or emotion it’s all auto tuned. I realized from being in bands there’s really great music when you look underground. There’s some local bands that have a strong voice and the attitude to match.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Playing in bands, touring, it’s tough. There’s times there’s no one in the audience and you’re not going to get paid. You have to want to do it and not for the money and fame. There’s time when you want to give up and you think people don’t give a damn, but you have to keep going. It’s crazy how people want a reunion for my band but when we were playing shows those people didn’t watch us play lol. Right now, doing my podcast im going at if the same way. I also release music on my own but as far as a band goes, you all have to have the same mission, it really is like a relationship.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I wish I unlearned how to not be a people pleaser and having the confidence to say no. There’s times in my band where we kept saying yes to every show and it ended up being some of the worst shows we played because we didn’t want to let people down but then other bands didn’t promote said show. Learn to say no and not feel bad. Not everyone is entitled to you.
