We were lucky to catch up with Izza Khalid recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Izza, thanks for joining us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
With being an interior designer there always comes lots of challenges. Throughout the design process you come across issues that challenge your creativity. This type of work truly makes you think outside of the box. There have been many times during the building process that builders do not communicate things properly and this causes issues to arise. This challenges me to figure out a solution quickly to make everything work out.
One example, was when we were dealing with a new build and I was doing a job site walk through. When walked in the dining room area it felt extremely small. My gut was telling me that the builder messed up on the square footage. I grabbed a measuring tape to measure the room to confirm if I was right. Turns out the builder had cut into the dining room by two feet rather than adding two feet to the entire home and pushing it back. Now we were dealing with a much smaller room and needed to figure out how to fit in the furniture pieces that were already selected and purchased for the space. This was extremely challenging and we did not want our client to have to start a new build because of this issue. The client was stressed out, as were we. It was a frustrating situation to be in because we could not just redo the foundation. Either we found a solution to this issue or the client had to start a new build once again. After some brainstorming and really thinking outside of the box we ended up cutting into the room next to it to making a niche where their sideboard would go. We added a recessed light to make it seem like the sideboard would be a show piece of the room and on the opposite room added two closets to keep it a bedroom. When everything was done and complete this niche was one of the favorite parts of the home. This proved that sometimes a mistake ends up being something beautiful and that is what I love about my job. Being able to create beautiful spaces for clients even when there might have been an issue. We love being able to create spaces that our clients love. Turning a house into a home is what we always strive for, no matter what crazy issue comes our way.
Izza, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I went to school and got my bachelors degree in home furnishings at University of North Texas. I landed an amazing internship in my last semester in college. This same internship offered me a job. After a year I ended up leaving and started free lancing. I have now been now doing this for 7 years and I truly love what I do. I have a following on Instagram of 11k followers. I love to show easy and affordable ways to update your home and make it trendier. I have been blessed with a husband who is also handy and enjoys the designing with me. We are a great team together. He now takes care of the contracting side of my job.
I do believe that you do not have to spend a fortune to make your house look like a designer home you just have to properly furnish it. Being able to buy the right pieces for your home and sticking to the proper proportion. Proportion is key. Many times people go too large or too small which makes the space feel odd.
I provide two services. One is a full design service. This is where we are completely hands on with everything and take the thinking out of everything for our client. We create the boards, get the samples. make the purchasing and then come in for install. You job is only to approve or decline the products. The second service we offer is e-design. This is a service where we will create the mood board, floorplan and give shoppable links. It gives a push for the clients that just need some guidance but are confidence in making their own purchases and putting the space together on their own.
I am proud of being able to furnish homes without an extremely high price tag. When many people think interior designer they think you need an extremely large budget. The budget needs to be fair but it does not need to be huge. I am extremely good about sticking within my clients budget and being transparent the entire project.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Being true to who you are and what you believe in. Do not stress about the numbers, the numbers do not mean anything. It is important that you connect with your audience and you are relatable. People want to be able to relate to you, they want to feel like they know you so its important that you stay true to you. Consistency is also key.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth has been the best source for me. Its important that I do a good job and get good feedback. Its important that when I complete my job my client was truly happy and I was happy knowing I did the best that I could do.
