We recently connected with Iyana Frazier and have shared our conversation below.
Iyana, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I knew from an early age that I wanted to follow a creative path. Growing up, I was always drawn to the arts—I spent hours singing, dancing, and writing songs, convinced that music would be my future. But as I got older and entered high school, my confidence hit an all-time low. I was in the process of discovering myself, and in that journey, I found my love for fashion and design. Fashion became my outlet—putting on my favorite outfits allowed me to step into the woman I aspired to be. That was the moment I knew my future would always be rooted in creativity.

Iyana, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Iyana Frazier, a Los Angeles native with a passion for fashion and content creation. My journey with social media began in 2019 when I started posting on Instagram, hoping to inspire others who wanted to explore fashion. I wanted to encourage people to wear what makes them feel confident while sharing my own love for style and self-expression.
In 2020, I began working on my clothing line, WeAreModern Clothing. The idea for the brand actually started in high school—I remember sitting in class, sketching designs, and envisioning a brand that truly spoke to people like me. When the time came to bring it to life, I knew it was nothing but God leading me in the right direction. After years of designing and planning, I officially launched WeAreModern Clothing in 2022.
WeAreModern is more than just a brand—it’s about self-expression. I created it for those who never felt seen, who felt like they didn’t fit into society’s mold. My message is simple: you are already everything you need to be. In many ways, I was also speaking to my younger self—the girl who once felt pressured to fit in, when in reality, embracing who I truly was is what made me stand out.
WeAreModern is currently taking a break, but we hope to bring it back soon.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One important lesson I’ve learned on my creative and business owner journey is that you should always be learning. For a long time, I believed school wasn’t something I was good at, and I often let that fear hold me back. But I’ve learned to push those doubts aside and embrace learning in all forms—whether it’s through college, reading, taking courses, or learning from others who are in position I would want to be in one day. I’m committed to doing whatever it takes to create a better future for myself.
In business, learning is constant. It’s about learning more about yourself, your customers, and the people you work with. I’m always asking questions and surrounding myself with people who have built successful businesses so I can learn from them. Owning a business is far from easy—there have been more downs than ups—but it’s the purpose behind it all that keeps me going. That drive pushes me to do whatever it takes to become a successful business owner.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
As creatives, we tend to be bolder than most. We’re willing to take risks, even when the path ahead seems uncertain. For some, this might not always make sense, and that’s why we often see young people with creative minds grow up feeling misunderstood. It can be challenging when the world doesn’t immediately recognize the value of their ideas and ambitions. So, I ask parents, teachers, and the world to extend grace to these kids, to truly understand that their unique approach to life and problem-solving is a gift. Nurturing their creativity, even when it’s hard to see where it will lead, can make all the difference in helping them thrive. Supporting their creative journey helps them grow into confident individuals who are more than capable of leaving their mark on the world.
