Iyana, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?

Throughout my life, music has been an innate, God-given talent. Raised on record players, I aspired to create songs evoking profound emotions. I valued diverse genres and, upon joining the high school band, honed my skills by learning sheet music. Initially drawn to drums, my music director recognized my potential with the trumpet, revealing a natural aptitude. While band consumed my time, songwriting remained a steadfast passion. I composed verses and songs for others, refining my craft during summers spent in Woodbridge, Virginia, where my father’s professional recording studio provided invaluable exposure. He entrusted us with equipment manuals, fostering autonomy and appreciation. This freedom ignited our self-production, mixing, and recording endeavors, which, though cringe-worthy in retrospect, confirmed my calling. Now, married to the creatively inclined Demetre and raising our six-year-old son Zaiir, I eagerly anticipate the discovery of his innate talents.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I’ve had the privilege of creating playbooks for renowned music artists and working alongside producers I’ve admired since my early days. With credentials as a songwriter, producer, and engineer, I’ve received 5 Grammy nominations and won 2. My achievements encompass three #1 Billboard chart-toppers and six platinum records. Yet, collaborating with independent artists consistently yields my most cherished projects. God gets all the glory in every accomplishment I have.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

Personally, my primary concern is the artist’s contentment with the song or project. When they establish a connection, I consider my task accomplished. Subsequent to its release, gauging global reactions and earning recognition, including plaques, serve as secondary objectives. Although topping the Billboard charts and obtaining platinum certification are shared ambitions, realistic expectations acknowledge these results aren’t always attainable.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?

Throughout my career, my goal has remained steadfast: crafting spaces that spark imagination and invite collaboration.
