Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to IvyMay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, IvyMay thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My journey as an entrepreneur has been an unexpected and profound path, one that has brought invaluable life lessons beyond my wildest imagination. As with many who take the entrepreneurial route – it started as a struggle for survival, but along the way, I uncovered the most significant bet I could ever make in this lifetime – a bet on myself.
Over the past 3.5 years, I confronted countless limiting beliefs and unresolved fragments of my past, each one casting a shadow on how I viewed myself and the world. Being an entrepreneur and pursuing your seemingly impossible dreams demands that you confront these beliefs head-on, unlearn them, and ultimately conquer them.
My mission runs deeper than the surface-level pursuits of DJ’ing and business. I was once an atheist, but at the age of 30, I had a profound revelation. Reflecting on my life, I couldn’t help but notice that everything I had ever aspired to achieve had manifested by the age of 26 – dream positions within dream companies, a full-ride scholarship for my Master’s Degree, my dog becoming a national model, and working for a leading pet corporation where my furry companion joined me daily.
These inexplicable successes led me to become agnostic, believing in a higher power that was guiding my path. It became my top priority to understand this guiding force, leading me to explore various religious concepts, blending them with newfound scientific revelations around energy to discover my own truth. I discarded most of what I had been told to believe and constructed a foundation rooted in my personal experiences.
What I’ve uncovered is that life is far simpler than we often imagine. It’s so straightforward that it’s challenging for us to grasp.
Through my DJ’ing journey, I’m putting my new beliefs into practice and witnessing their remarkable effects. I share my journey with others in real-time, offering them a front-row seat to watch it unfold. One day, I aspire to possess a platform where I can convey these profound revelations to others, empowering them to lead lives filled with joy.
IvyMay, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Growing up Vietnamese, my parents were refugees and I felt a responsibility to realize the American Dream, because that’s all they wanted for their kids. Asian culture often expects us to become doctors, lawyers, or engineers, but as a child, my heart yearned for artistry. The conventional wisdom said artists never find financial security, a no-go for my parents. I pursued an MBA on a full-ride scholarship, climbed the corporate ladder at Fortune 500 companies, until 2020, when I launched my own brand, IvyMay & Co.
From a 2nd-story apartment, IvyMay & Co. sprouted as a houseplant delivery venture with my ex-boyfriend. When COVID-19 hit, four months in, I knew this was my path. I left my corporate job, but an immediate eviction notice and multiple moves left me feeling the panic of true survival. Amidst the struggle, I battled with my self-worth, paying my team before myself. In 2022, I ran out of savings and relocated to Las Vegas, where I dove into learning about the possibilities of a higher power.
In this new journey, I stumbled upon energy and the law of attraction, realizing it was the key to my past successes. I embraced my childhood passion for music, rekindling my love for dance music by becoming a DJ at age 33. My music alias is IvyMay, named after IvyMay & Co., my first baby, heart and soul. My approach for DJing differs; I blend my business acumen with music, building a brand beyond just music. My goal is to inspire others to follow their dreams, showing them it’s possible through creative expression, unwavering determination, and an understanding of energetic vibrations.
IvyMay & Co. still operates out of San Diego today, and I hope to eventually have the two brands I’ve built under the IvyMay name play off one another.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Abraham Hicks has been a guiding light for me. I used to wonder how I achieved my past successes, and it didn’t seem like mere coincidence. Then, my friend Krystian recommended a book called “Ask and It Is Given” by Abraham Hicks, and it changed my life. This book introduced me to the law of attraction, a principle I had unknowingly applied in my 20s and was now ready to embrace consciously.
The law of attraction teaches that everything in the world is made of energy, including you, me, and the seemingly empty space around us. This energy is like the nervous system of the universe, and it flows through all of us. We all originate from this universal energy source, which is inherently good, all-knowing, and immensely powerful. Since we are all connected to it, we are equally loved by it. However, as humans in our physical bodies, we tend to overthink and hold onto past experiences, which can impact our present and future.
But there’s a way to tap into this source energy and align ourselves with it. By choosing to live in the present moment with joy, we connect with this universal energy, which knows everything we’ve ever experienced and understands where we are in relation to where we want to be; our desires. Abraham Hicks explains that you can gauge your alignment with this source energy by how you feel. When you feel excited, creative, enthusiastic, and empowered, you’re living in harmony with this source. Conversely, when you experience negative emotions like self-doubt, fear, or anger, you’ve turned away from this source. The beauty is that it’s always there for you, no matter your age or circumstances. You can turn to it at any moment, and it will guide you toward what you want to achieve.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Society often tells us that pursuing creative careers, like those in the arts, is incredibly challenging. This belief is flawed. In reality, any career can be attainable if you understand how to align your energy with your goals.
Imagine each of us as a radio tuner in a world made of energy. Just like a radio can’t switch from 96.3 to 99.7 on its own, our thoughts carry a certain “vibration,” which becomes stronger the more we focus on them. So, if your dream is to become the world’s most renowned artist, but you constantly think it’s too difficult to achieve, you won’t reach your goal. Your energy doesn’t match the opportunity you’re aiming for. In simpler terms, what you believe from the culmination and frequency of your thoughts and your focus affects your chances of success.
