We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ivory Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ivory, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Being a hairstylist came natural to me as a child I could remember cutting my Barbies hair in different styles and using Markers to color their hair, vibrant colors.
Once I became a little older and my mom started taking me to the salon. I love the atmosphere. Women talked about women’s issue. It was a safe space. I was able to see how women came in feeling bad or a little down but once their style was finished. You could see the joy come over them! The salon was like therapy!
As for my Hair Growth Serum DHS. I recently created it for my grandmother. She was having issues with her scalp and thinning. So I began to research, different natural oils and herbs that could help with the problem. Its how DHS was born!

Hi, I’m Ivory Rena
Licensed hairstylist and owner of Irock Beauty lounge. I created this space for women to have a safe space to relax and be pampered while getting their hair done. I offer luxury extensions, but my main focus is on healthy hair. I’ve seen a lot of women struggle mentally and have low self-esteem because they were losing hair. Or not want to come into a salon because they had a traumatic experience before. It’s my mission to make sure that every woman that steps foot in the salon can get a little piece of heaven. As women we sacrifice so much for our family , Children, Friends and jobs. Most women think about everyone before themselves they’re always sacrificing for others. I created a s Spa Environment Women can focus on themselves relax, and keep their hair healthy!
I created DHS serum for women who struggle with scalp issues like thinning dandruff or retaining length. Women can be very self-conscious and even get a little sad when Suffering with hair issues. I relieve them of that stress.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Two lessons that I had to unlearn was doing it all myself and not asking for help. As a woman entrepreneur starting out, I thought that I could do it all alone. I soon found out that I couldn’t Scale my business without help. I’m actually the only entrepreneur in my family so I had no idea what I was doing when I first started out. I read books and researched but it just wasn’t enough. I decided to get a mentor and it was one of the best ideas I’ve ever had. Coaching is one of the things that has made the most impact in my business. Having someone who knows about business and can guide you save you a lot of time and money. Having the right business coach can also help you connect with other like-minded business owners so you don’t feel alone. Being an entrepreneur or business owner can be hard get the help you need!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
As a business owner, I built my following on social media by being my authentic self. It’s easy to buy followers and likes. However, I didn’t want to be that person. I want genuine connections with People who resonate with me and my brand.
I showed up as myself
My business coach helped me find my Avatar (Target audience). Once I decided who I wanted to serve, I began to create content that was authentic to me and cater to them! I post strategically instead of randomly.
Social media it’s constantly changing So I make sure that I stay undated on the current trends to help me thrive.
