We were lucky to catch up with Ivo Fedak recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ivo, appreciate you joining us today. Quality control is a challenge almost every entrepreneur has had to focus on when growing – any advice, stories or insight around how to best ensure quality is maintained as your business scales?
We just recently built a new farm. With building this farm it comes with many new challenges. Scaling a business is tough enough let alone a mushroom farm. Having the best quality product is what we stand for and now that we are producing more than ever it keeping up with our personal standards came with a lot challenges. Choosing quality over quantity is key to making a name for yourself when you are the little guy.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Farming has been my passion for as long as i can remember. I came from a small town in Germany off the main city of Kiel. That town was surrounded by green forests, beaches, and lots of larger farms all owned by individual farmers. I grew up around it and saw it daily. My grandparents and father always taught me how to grow things things. Ever since then it became a part of my life. I started growing indoors in california about 18 years ago, always interested in controlling climates in areas that usually dont have things growing in the wild mushrooms being a perfect example. So i decided to take a different path in life which came with its hurdles, but inevidibly i put everything i had into pursuing a job in indoor farming. Years later after many headaches we are now growing some of the best mushrooms i have ever seen. It makes me proud to watch my team and myself grow and learn new things daily to become the best that we can be. We now even offer consulting to a wide range of farming to help better the agricultural industry which in my opinion is the most important industry there is. Without food nothing gets done or survives.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
We started small. Under my uncles crawl space to where we are now. My main goal was to keep my business my business. Investors get in the way of creativity so we did it the old fashion way. Blood, sweat, and tears. Until your business is where you want it to be outside help is an option that you need to really think about wanting or needing.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
We have failed more times than id like to admit, but each time came with a priceless amount of knowledge. Without messing things up we would never be where we are now. You can read and copy others all you want buy what puts you above the rest is hands on self taught knowledge.
