We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ivette Kuyateh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ivette thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
Kuyateh Law Group is an award winning San Diego law firm focused on helping families protect their assets and peace of mind. We go beyond just showing up for court or drafting estate planning documents. We coach and educate our clients so they feel empowered with information- and that is a mission I am proud of. My estate planning clients are no different. Once my clients understand estate planning is more than just death planning, their focus shifts to planning for their short and long term goals.
Most estate planning attorneys just draft up documents. We understand the importance of putting a plan in place that ensures they are properly insured, maximizing their investments, building their savings, and use tax or asset protection strategies can make a huge impact on being able to plan for and weather life’s storms like long term incapacitation, divorce, or getting sued. We understand there is no “one size fits all” approach. Each client has different needs for today and goals for the future.
Ivette, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

My passion for what I do stems from my early childhood. My mom died when I was 11 years old. I know firsthand how planning for the unknown can shape our loved ones’ futures. My mom was a single mom and left a will naming a guardian for me and life insurance that helped me go to college. None of those could replace her, but they did secure my future and that’s what I want for my clients.
Ivette is a former prosecutor, experienced litigator and zealous advocate having handled hundreds of trials. Often referred to as a “Wonder Woman” both in and out of the courtroom for her passion for standing strong as a voice for the voiceless and advocating for the rights of others in her community by also serving victims of abuse and trauma. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in 2014, her cases have ranged from private employment discrimination and harassment lawsuits, family law and immigration matters to large insurance defense cases for Fortune 500 companies and public entities. Ivette is a published scholar on Federal Indian Law and holds lobbying experience at both the state and federal levels. Today, Ivette is a highly sought after expert on Financial Abuse and Domestic Violence training service providers and first responders nationwide and dedicates one day a month to providing free legal counsel to victims of abuse at One Safe Place Family Justice Center in San Marcos.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
It is such a huge compliment to get referrals from people who I have never personally met! Most of the time, they’ve seen me or heard of me through a public speaking event, one of my webinars, or social media. Whenever I talk, I focus on educating people on things they need to know and I firmly believe that’s what has helped me build my brand and reputation. People remember you more when you provide them with valuable information over a sales pitch so find what you’re good at and teach people!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
My niches are business owners and women who find themselves in the “sandwich generation”. Business owners come with an array of needs to help them preserve and protect their assets. Too often, they have blind spots they are completely unaware of that need to be handled with proper estate planning. Women who are caring for children still at home or returning home and also caregiving for older generations also come with a very specific set of needs. Many times, they are the backbone of their family and planning for themselves is put off until there is a crisis. The toll on them extends past the day to day and often impacts their careers when they have to make changes to accomodate caregiving responsibilities. I love working with these groups and helping them prepare for life so that their businesses and their goals are preserved while they help others.
