We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ivett Soto a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ivett, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Neither. I am a big believer in “everything happens for a reason”. I think that if I started sooner, I would have not been ready. I believe that I would have not been able to handle all the failures. I think that putting yourself out there is a scary thing to do. I remember when I created “photosbyivett”. I was like “what are people going to think?” “Are people even going to book me?” But at the same time, I didn’t care. I love photography. I love being creative. I was going to do what I enjoyed no matter how many times I failed.
Ivett, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Ivett. I started photography mostly as a hobby. I took pictures of clouds, sunsets, birds, trees etc. all the time. I got my first camera in 2016. I didn’t use it much because I was super overwhelmed with learning the settings. It wasn’t until 2020 that I really sat down and learned how to properly use my camera because I had the extra time. I was furloughed from my supervising job for 8 months. During this time, I learned as much as I could on YouTube. I practiced with friends and family members as much as I could. I posted my work until someone reached out to me for photos. I was so happy! Fast forward to now there is still so much I could learn to perfect my craft but I am so proud of how far I have come.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being creative is being able to share it with others. I love being able to be a part of other people’s special moments. I love sending galleries out and two minutes later seeing their Instagram posts with long captions with so much meaning behind them.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think the best way society can support artists and creatives is word of mouth. That’s the easiest and the cheapest way to get others to see our work. Word of mouth has honestly helped me the most. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard ” I saw so and so’s photos that you took and knew I wanted to book with you”. Even just sharing a post helps so much to get our work to different audiences.
