We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ivan Magdaleno. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ivan below.
Alright, Ivan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
As a musician who owns my own studio, runs a band, and works as an audio engineer, my journey of learning has been a combination of formal education, practical experience, and self-guided learning.
To acquire the skills I have today, I started by learning an instrument and studying music theory through lessons and music videos. Alongside that, I pursued specific courses and certifications in sound engineering, recording techniques, and studio production to learn audio engineering techniques. Practical experience, including playing in bands, collaborations, and visiting various studios, played a vital role in honing my skills and expanding my knowledge.
Looking back, there are a few things I could have done to speed up my learning process. Seeking mentorship or apprenticeship opportunities with experienced audio engineers or musicians would have provided valuable guidance and insights. Connecting with professionals in the industry through networking events and building relationships would have opened doors to new learning opportunities. Actively seeking out workshops, seminars, and conferences related to music production, audio engineering, and band management would have kept me updated on industry trends and techniques.
In this multifaceted role, essential skills encompass musicianship, including proficiency in my primary instrument(s) and a solid understanding of music theory. As an audio engineer, technical skills such as sound recording, mixing, mastering, and knowledge of audio equipment and software are crucial. Effective communication skills are necessary for collaborating with band members, clients, and other industry professionals. Time management, organization, and problem-solving skills are also vital for managing my studio and handling multiple responsibilities.
Obstacles have certainly emerged along the way. Limited access to resources and equipment, especially when operating on a tight budget or in a geographically low income area, posed challenges. Balancing multiple roles and responsibilities limited the time available for focused learning and skill development. Financial constraints sometimes made it challenging to invest in formal education, attend workshops, or upgrade studio equipment. Additionally, staying updated with rapidly evolving technologies and industry practices requires continuous learning and adaptation.
However, my dedication, perseverance, and passion for learning have helped me overcome these obstacles. Seeking out online resources, joining online communities or forums, and engaging in peer-to-peer learning have provided alternative avenues for growth. Collaborating with fellow musicians, attending local music events, and experimenting with new techniques have enhanced my skills and broadened my horizons.
In the end, the journey of learning as a musician, studio owner, band manager, and audio engineer is an ongoing one. It requires a commitment to continuous improvement, a willingness to adapt to changes, and a love for the art and craft of music.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the lesson’s I’ve had to learn the hard way is giving trust before it was earned. Without giving away to many details, There have been instances where I’ve trusted whole heartily only to find out the individual(s) were taking advantage, spreading rumors and attempting to disrupt my personal relationships.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative, is the creative process and curating an escape from the daily routine of life.
